Comic Relief — Coach’s Latest Capsule Collection with Michael B. Jordan Features an Unlikely Suspect: Naruto Uzumaki

It is not a lightweight assumption we’re making when we say that Stuart Vevers has completely retooled the DNA of Coach. Once a brand that one would go “Okay cool, sure thing”, it has now gone to one synonymous with Wild West cool, shearling coats and super fly cross-body or bum bags.

What then does one named Mr Vevers do to up the cool-factor of his brand? You partner with someone who not only faces your brand but who shares the same mercurial passions as you. That our friends, is Michael B. Jordan.

Coach X Michael B. Jordan Denim and shearling jacket, cotton-blend T-shirt, polyester pants, suede and shearling boots, leather clutch.

The product range varies from a sick-looking parka that can be worn three ways —by itself (duh), a black jacket with a hood or a crimson parka once you detach the black outer — to a pair of lightweight rubber hiking boots for all your heavier outdoor Brother Nature needs. The influence from Naruto is equally as strong as the technicalities of the pieces (the collection is big on removable sleeves, tactical straps and elastic closures).

Sharingan aka “Copy Wheel Eye”, a motif from the anime is reimagined with Coach’s Retro C Graphic and these references are based on the similarities Naruto and Michael share. Both were outsiders when they started out in the industry (the former now whoops some serious ninja ass and the other, a bonafide movie star) and are now champions in their fields.

“With my name on this collection, it was important to design pieces that represent my cultural influences and my community; pieces that I could see my friends, family and fans wearing with pride,” said Jordan.

“As with all aspects of my work, this collection is about bringing fresh perspectives and unique voices to the forefront. Expanding into the fashion design space was rewarding beyond my expectations. I’m grateful to Stuart and Coach for providing me with the opportunity and expertise to execute a collection I’m extremely proud of.”

In case you’re still drawing the correlation between Naruto and Michael, head over to YouTube and search “Michael B. Jordan Naruto”. The man really loves his anime. Or you can watch the video below, whatever floats your boat.

The Coach x Michael B. Jordan collection will be available from 3 October at Wisma Atria and The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands. Prices range from $165 to $3,900.
