Simple Pleasures — 2020’s New Rules Of Dressing According To Our 2019 Shoots

  • By Bryan Goh

No one asked but producing a monthly fashion title is balls-to-the-wall hard work. Like, a mixture of tears, laughter and nervous laughing hard work. Looking back through the 48 shoots we’ve done last year, we’ve realised that our favourite images are the ones where the celebrities are styled simply — almost like they’ve dressed themselves.

We’re calling it a yearning for simpler times in the current climate we live in where life seems tougher (Hello? Potential GST hike much?) or a world where everything you do is judged on the internet. Here, nine images we’ve curated to reflect the simple sensibility we hanker for. Call it a four minute eye-candy filled read or an education on the staples for your new wardrobe. Whatever floats your boat.

Pictured Above: In our February ’19 issue, Nathan Hartono’s flexes (do you not follow him on instagram?) in a Fendi wool-blend polo shirt but his Montblanc 1858 Automatic Chronograph flexes hader.

A Denim Jacket

JB of Korean mega boy band G0T7 proves that the better blues do not need to come in bells and whistles — his Prada denim jacket comes in a fit as handsome as the 26 year old himself.

A Pair Of Louche Pants

Call it a fashion industry that’s still hung up on the Phoebe Philo effect but like Korean actor Kim Young Kwang in our April ’19 issue, we’re big fans of a pair of louche trousers. Especially if they’re from Bottega Veneta.

An Alternative to Black

How is Shane Pow so relaxed in our May ’19 issue? His Hermès Wool-blend jacket and cotton-blend pants are in an alternative and less HR-manager shade of black — an earthy shade of brown.

Dolce&Gabbana Cargo Trousers.

A Two Piece That Isn’t A Suit

How does one wear pyjamas without looking like an Asian Hugh Hefner? A shirt with a camp collar and tapered trousers — just like Ro Woon of SF9 in his Louis Vuitton two-piece for our June/July ’19 issue.

A Pair of Luxe Joggers

Alexander Yue’s trick to making joggers look smarter in our August ’19 issue? Making sure that they’re made of wool (if confused, go for Fendi like the one he’s wearing) instead of a gym-boy slub material.

Photography Joel Low, Styling Wilson Lim, Grooming Beno Lim using Boy de Chanel, Hair Manisa Tan using Revlon Professional.

Coach Horse And Carriage Fleece Track Pants.
Prada Double Technical Jersey Trousers.
Versace Greco Border Print Gym Pants.

A Three-In-One

Who’s handsome, suave and decked out impeccably in a three-piece fail safe suit? Jam Hsiao in our September ’19 issue.

A Sash That Doubles As a Scarf

First introduced in his SS ’19 show, Kim Jone’s brought his iconic sash back for Dior Men’s FW ’19 which makes for one handsome statement like our handsome October ’19 cover star Nam Joo Hyuk.

Bottega Veneta Cashmere Scarf.
Gucci GG Wool Scarf
Louis Vuitton Jelham Duo City Wool Scarf.

A Funkier Hawaiian Shirt

That hawaiian shirt you bought from Bali that’s turning you into a slightly cooler version of your dad? Swap it out for one that’s really “fashion ugly“. Yung Raja, the cover star of our November ’19 issue knows what’s good — one from Prada.

Photography Joel Low, Styling Wilson Lim, Photography assistant Alfie Pan,  Styling assistant Joe Tan, Grooming and hair Sha Shamsi using Dior Cosmetics and IGK.

Gucci GG Embroidered Shirt.
Prada Double Match Cotton Shirt.
Burberry Submarine Cotton Shirt.

A Brighter Puffer

Step 1 to winning a wintery climate: Buy a puffer jacket. Step 2: Making sure it’s bright shade puts you in an equally bright mood like this Givenchy one on Youngmin of AB6IX in our December/January ’20 issue.

Photography G.T. Gan, Fashion Direction Wilson Lim, Grooming Jung Hye Sun, Hair Moon Kyung Hee, Styling Son Hee Sung, Production Jeannie Ang, Location Marina Bay Sands Singapore.
