Three General Stores Meet Restaurants that are Anything but General

Lagoile Jean Dubost (fyi, he's french) tableware.

We’re not pointing fingers or naming-and-shaming but there are some pretty mediocre brunch places in Singapore — poached eggs collapse into a soggy mess, the only freshness from a sausage is how fresh it came out of a microwave, and if you happily ordered a cocktail, it is served in a  90% mixer and 10% alcohol ratio. Our exacting standards when it comes to the fine art of brunching informs how we curated these three spots — the food should be as consistent as your gymming habits (always lit, bro), the location shouldn’t be too far flung off and to one-up the rest, you can shop designer goods there.

Pictured Above: House of AnLi.
Not only does the House of AnLi serve a faultless European inspired brunch menu — Sole Meuniere (lemon sole with butter caper sauce), Carbonnades De Chez Nous (beef cheek with fondant potato and baby carrots), and New Zealand organic eggs on sourdough toast (hey, at least you can add avocados on it) — the anglo-sensibilities are carried on to its decor and selection of houseware.

Exclusive European labels are available if you have the dough to cart them home and artisanal cutlery ranging from French label Laguiole by Jean Dubost and Costa Nova plates will make your pad look and feel more adult

House of AnLi is located at Tanglin Mall, 163 Tanglin Road, #03-17, Singapore 247933.

Monument Lifestyle

Monument Lifestyle.
Park Bench Deli Sandwiches.
Swell Water Bottles.
Room Sprays and Candles.

Monument Lifestyle practices the art of Californian chill — warm coloured wood decor, an airy space, Frisco coffee (Editor: sorry to the Italians but Frisco coffee is the best coffee) and it serves one of the best sourdough toast in the ‘lil red dot (gentle reminder again, we take our brunch seriously).

Reminiscent of a Los Angeles neighbourhood café, the food is unpretentious — classic sourdough toast with avocado, croissants, muffins and Park Bench Deli sandwiches — but their curation of menswear is where it gets interesting. Surfwear label Katin, grooming brands Gentlemen’s Hardware and Hanz de Fuko, and menswear label Alex Mill (FYI: he’s the son of J Crew’s founder).

Previously, the hangout for creatives (say hi to us if you ever pop by!) and office workers popping in for coffee, makes this your new brunch spot. Every moment here is monumental.

Monument Lifestyle is located at 75 Duxton Rd, Singapore 089534.

Swee Lee Social Club

Swee Lee Social Club.
Another brunch classic: waffles and cream.
Swee Lee Social Club.
It's booze 'o' clock all day here.

Funnily enough, we hanker for analogue things when technology progresses towards a “isn’t-this-going-to-be-a-Black-Mirror-episode” level. There seems to be a bizarre demand for old school Gameboy Colours on the market and word is on the street that one of the coolest things to flex on the ‘gram is a vinyl player.

Swee Lee Social Club quells the problem of having to dig through dusty racks for the above in shady places — their latest concept store sells musical instruments, vinyls, headphones, speakers, fashion, footwear and brunch. Brunch here is a no-frills menu of coffee (flat whites and cold brews), hot chocolate, toast and waffles with ice cream but you might choose to spend more time perusing the vinyl section instead. Options range from the Rolling Stones, Clairo and Justin Bieber.

Swee Lee Social Club is located at The Star Vista, 1 Vista Exchange Green, #01-07/08/09/10, Singapore 138617.
