Prada’s Re-Nylon Collection Comes Full Circle Again

  • By Charmaine Tan

In its sixth iteration since 2019, the Prada Re-Nylon Collection deepens its support of sustainability and ocean literacy with UNESCO, expanding this chapter of eco-driven luxury.

To describe the Prada Re-Nylon Collection as iconic is not an overstatement. The way Miuccia Prada has woven the pragmatic material into the modern cannon of luxury since it became one of the brand’s signature finishes in the ’70s is nothing short of visionary.

The fact that all the production of Prada’s virgin nylon is now converted to regenerated nylon — created through the recycling and purification of plastic collected from the ocean, landfills, and textile fibre waste — is a feat in itself. Through a complex process of depolymerization and re-polymerisation, Prada Re-Nylon yarn is produced in a circular way. But the spirit of innovation doesn’t just stop there.

The latest evolution of the fabric — the ECONYL®, a regenerated nylon yarn that can be ceaselessly recycled to produce material of the same high quality — responds to luxury’s increasing mindfulness and embrace of creative action that promotes environmental sustainability. Or maybe its an extension of the notion put forth by Prada in the first place; this chicken-and-egg discussion proof of the influential standing this house has in the luxury fashion conversation today.

Given this unique platform and voice, the latest campaign for the Re-Nylon Collection amplifies its advocacy for environmental and ocean literacy, tapping on actors and activists Emma Watson and Benedict Cumberbatch (lensed by Willy Vanderperre), as well as a follow-up crew of impactful Asian voices that include everyone from NCT’s Jaehyun, TWICE’s Sana, to ENHYPEN, Lixian, and our very own Glenn Yong, all to echo the work of Prada Group and UNESCO’s ongoing partnership.

As of July 2023, 1% of the proceeds from the Prada Re-Nylon Collection supports SEA BEYOND, an educational program launched in 2019 by Prada Group and UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC). In line with the Group’s passionate societal concerns and the value it has always afforded to education and culture, SEA BEYOND has since raised global awareness on sustainability and ocean literacy principles, educating young generations around the world about the ocean, how to love them, then go on to protect it.

Perhaps the return of fashioning timeless and eternal classics in Re-Nylon inspire more brands to follow suit. Not just to attempt sustainability, but to commit and embrace it in both concept and practice. Till the industry learns that true luxury is one that lasts through time, Prada’s Re-Nylon will continue to lead in this field of fashion that is not just eco-conscious, but eco-celebratory as well.
