PFW SS24: Marni Encourages You To Pick And Choose Who You Want To Be

  • By Sadiq Shah

For all the talk of a return to direct simplicity, you can always count on the outliers such as Marni to bring in something unexpected.

Marni enunciates the feeling of “something-so-wrong-yet-so-right”, as seen in the new collection that celebrated individualistic expressions of style through Francesco Risso’s lens of child-like insouciance.

Following their previous runway shows in New York and Tokyo over the past two seasons, Marni has now made its presence known in the fashion capital, Paris, for their SS24 collection. The show was hosted at the late Karl Lagerfeld’s miniature Versailles, where guests were seated on inflatable white tubes winding through the apartments and gardens. The contrast between the opulent salons and the whimsical seating arrangement foreshadowed what was to come.

Enter Risso’s cast of characters for the new collection — all donning his subversive outlook that brought back the likes of the pannier (apt in Paris if we must say so) that was deconstructed for a refreshing take on a skirt suit. Amidst this seemingly tactile collection, featuring dresses adorned with stickers and blooming 3D florals, an array of Marni’s signature prints and checks appeared in simple or tailored styles that skewed genderless.

Every look at Marni’s SS24 had a precise purpose, a “happily ever after” narrative that blends dream and reality, good and bad taste — which at the end of the day, serves to uplift its wearer through an unmistakable charm that only the Italian brand has.
