It’s Onitsuka Tiger’s Diamond Jubilee! For its 75th anniversary, the Japanese label is pulling no punches and putting up a global constellation of festivities.
Everybody say happy birthday to Onitsuka Tiger! The Japanese fashion house — best known in its all its emblematic shades of yellows, blacks and reds — is turning 75. An old adage asserts that wisdom comes with age. When it comes to Onitsuka Tiger, we can’t help but agree. Especially when we’re talking about the wisdom in having a good time. To usher in the era of its Diamond Jubilee are a slew of Onitsuka-branded parties, set to take place from Tokyo all the way to Paris. And because the events have Onitsuka Tiger’s DNA coursing through its metaphorical veins, attendees can strap in for the guarantee of a roaring good time.
For one, the HÔTEL Onitsuka Tiger in Paris exemplifies the label’s commitment to a good time — just purely through programming alone. Continuing a house-level association with international cultural luminaries, the HÔTEL Onitsuka Tiger sees a stacked line-up of experiential artistry, spanning the cultural movements of dining, fine arts and music. Held in the iconic Champs-Élysées street, an expansive list of artistic engagements are set to take place in the brand’s conceptual hospitality hotspot. Examples include the rostering of international music acts like pianist Yuja Wang and multi-musician Maïa Barouh, a YELLOW TIGER CAFÉ dining programme curated by Michelin-starred Yoji Tokuyoshi, and a display of cultural artworks designed by emerging artist Yutaro Inagaki.
Also reflective of the label’s wisdom in having a good time? A milestone marker of a birthday celebration was held in the buzzy district of Tokyo’s Omotesando, where 75 years of the label’s fashion-forward history sat on full display for a lengthy list of VIPs in attendance. To commemorate each year of its existence, Onitsuka Tiger — encompassing labels such as THE ONITSUKA, Onitsuka Tiger, OTIGER and more — showcased 75 distinctive pairs of shoes, each one significant to the rich heritage of the house. And given the house’s inclination for the experimental and innovative, immersively rich programming was to be expected. Signposting the next 75 years of innovation to come, the exhibition featured futuristic techniques that included state of the art CGI, XR technology and motion capture systems. Joining in the fun were South Korean actor Chae Jong-hyeop, Malaysian cosplay artist Hakken, Thai actress “Bow” Maylada Susri, Taiwanese actor Jasper Liu, Philippines-based creator Heart Evangelista, and homegrown talents like Singapore’s own Desmond Tan.
