Onitsuka Tiger Teams Up With Astroboy For Its 75th Anniversary

  • By Manfred Lu

Singapore’s Ayden Sng and Carrie Wong join Vietnam’s Quynh Anh Shyn and Nam Phung, and Malaysian siblings Christinna, Jestinna, and Perry Kuan in Tokyo, Japan to flaunt the largest anniversary drop of the century — the Onitsuka Tiger x Astroboy collection, available in stores today.

Celebrating one’s 75th anniversary is a big enough deal, why not, at the same time, drop a capsule collection that is bound to disrupt how collaborations are done? Take it from Onitsuka Tiger, whose idea of toasting its history includes the ambitious launch of the Astroboy collection where two Japanese icons converge to draw associations closer to the term “streetwear”, followed by a celebrity-filled launch party.

Ayden wears a sweatshirt, shirt, pants, shoulder bag, and MEXICO 66 SD shoes from the Onitsuka Tiger x Astroboy collection, as seen above.

What makes a good party is its crowd. To start the festivities that would spread out across the rest of this year, the collection was released in secrecy to an event in its Ginza concept store on 11 December 2023. Its guests were flown from all over the world and converged in Tokyo — which includes Seulgi of Red Velvet, Gulf Kanawut, Conan Gray, Singapore’s Ayden Sng and Carrie Wong, Vietnam’s Quynh Anh Shyn and Malaysian siblings Christinna, Jestinna and Perry Kuan. And to top it all off, an opportunity to flaunt some of the most desirable pieces in the collection.

Carrie wears a hoodie, shirt, skirt, socks, and MEXICO 66 SD shoes from the Onitsuka Tiger x Astroboy collection, as seen above.

The brand, which started in 1949 by founder Onitsuka Shōkai, has evolved from producing mere sports shoes to footwear that has been adorned, and adored, by celebrities over the last few decades. Thanks to its appearance in films, and eventually on the streets before its domination on social media, its relevance has never been far removed from popular culture.

Thus, a drop of 47 pieces that encompasses a beloved manga character and Onitsuka Tiger seems aptly fitting for a brand that has reached such heights — weaving the heritage of a Japanese giant with another becomes more than a mere traditional retrospective of its legacy.
