#MFMF117: Weish’s Strange And Shapeshifting Playlist Of Raw Sounds

  • By Charmaine Tan

Instead of featuring just the Men’s Folio team’s weekly playlists (you can catch up here), however, we’ve opened up the column to friends, industry mates, and people who we think have the right groove.

This week, we have the pleasure of inviting multidisciplinary artist and sound curator of local radio station indiego, Weish, to share just ten of her sonic rare finds. Read on for an introduction to her picks:

“Some of my all-time favourites and some recent discoveries I can’t get enough of. It’s a strange and diverse mix of genres, but I tried to arrange them with some kind of flow. They’re all connected by some measure of grit and darkness, an animal rawness that I always look for in music.”

Daniela Lalita — Tenía Rezón
This is the music I’ve always wanted to make. I love all the different shapes and shades of her voice! That sick chorus melody is going to be stuck in your head for a long, long time.

Obongjayar — Message in a Hammer
I wrestled with which Obongjayar track to share for ages… they’re all fire. He’s another vocalist with a thousand different voices, depending on the album, the collaborator and the producer.

Claude Glass — Corcovado
The solo project of local artist Isa Ong, better known for his work in bands like Pleasantry, Amateur Takes Control, sub:shaman. I love how fresh his sound is, there really isn’t anything like it.

Jockstrap — Acid
This is what all pop should sound like! Catchy and accessible but with so much innovation and surprise in the production and songwriting.

.gif ft. Bani Haykal — Only Yours
A little embarrassed that my own song is on this list — I usually cannot stand listening to my own voice — but I’m just still marvelling at the fact that we collaborated with Bani Haykal on this track. His singing voice is so hard to come by, and we’ve all missed it dearly since his days as the vocalist of the legendary band B-Quartet. Am endlessly honoured to be able to hear my voice and his come together.

Moses Sumney, James Blake — Make Out in My Car
Can’t get enough of this one. A collaboration made in heaven.

Son Lux — The Fool You Need
Son Lux is one of my favourite bands of all time — long before they did the soundtrack to Everything Everywhere All at Once! Again, I spent ages deciding which song of theirs to pick for this playlist… they’re all mindblowing.

Jaala — Double Dutch
Aussie band. Real badass track.

Requin — Aldrin Buzz
Another Aussie band! Criminally underrated. This album is all bangers.

The Observatory — Oscilla
Couldn’t leave The Observatory out of this list — they’re the OGs of local alt. They’ve got so many albums, each vastly different to the next, but here’s a favourite that I always return to.
