Dolce&Gabbana Spring Summer 2022 Crystallised the Noughties

  • By Wilson Lim

Domenico Dolce & Stefano Gabbana titled their Dolce&Gabbana Spring Summer 2022 Men’s collection, “DG Light Therapy” and there were plenty of shimmers. From the stage setup of light installations to models walking in a myriad of sequins and crystals embellishment, Dolce&Gabbana is set to dazzle the world come next year when we step out of the gloom (hopefully).

While other fashion Houses remain contributive to the 1990s renaissance, Dolce&Gabbana Spring Summer 2022 sets its sight on the 2000s — “the era where globalisation has made it possible to incorporate different trends and styles from the different continents of the world.”

In the Dolce&Gabbana Spring Summer 2022 men’s collection, the two co-founders dreamed up a collective imagination to represent life that sees a myriad from evening wear, casual wear to swimwear and even sportswear — essentially the duo’s dressing of Italian men from all walks of life permeated throughout.

Apart from the glitz, the Dolce&Gabbana Spring Summer 2022 collection was a stronghold of the House’s craftsmanship. Tailoring, brocade, embroidery, crystal embroidery made entirely by hand, cordonetto lace and hand painting — all brought varied facets to the interpretation of colour and light. From the obvious crystal embroidery to prints that mimic light installations, the Dolce&Gabbana Spring Summer 2022 collection also proposes to see light in bursts of colours — a riot of hand painted shirts and jeans, and also newspapers parts, coloured plastic elements and sequins are translated onto transparent vinyls.

The silhouettes presented in the Dolce&Gabbana Spring Summer 2022 collection was indeed representative of the 2000s. Tailoring is cut more roomy in the shoulders and also in the pants, although the pants are also variedly cut from skinny and straight to baggy, drop-crotch style — which is a more accurate depiction of the noughties. The designers also expressed that it was their aim to talk about the 2000s in a modern way alongside a new interpretation of tradition, which sees the translation of renaissance puff sleeves onto suit jackets. While grunge has been giving the general direction (the destroyed denims are key) for the collection, the designers chose to remind the audience of their Italian style by pairing it with embellished moccasins and lace-up shoes.

Viewed in its entirety, the Dolce&Gabbana Spring Summer 2022 collection might seem overwhelming to the senses with the full outburst of the rainbow spectrum but there are choice pieces that could bring exciting additions to every man’s wardrobe.

Look 5: 2000s grunge with a crystal-embellished statement jacket that would bring one through any era.

Look 52: The signature cordonetto lace typically seen in the women’s collections are translated for this Dolce&Gabbana Spring Summer 2022 men’s collection in a cut-and-sewn jacket that brings sensuality to evening wear.

Look 34: Another one of Dolce&Gabbana’s signature is the brocade that is contrasted with the classic pinstripe on a peak lapel double-breasted jacket to give a Dolce&Gabbana Italian flair to evening wear.

Look 28: An interesting interpretation of the evening suit that sees the double-breasted buttons relegated to the waistline and accentuate it — a great suggestion for someone who doesn’t want to break the strict “Black Tie” policy but still amping it up.

Look 48: While the colour black is the core building block of the Dolce&Gabbana brand, there are still other vivid propositions throughout the Dolce&Gabbana Spring Summer 2022 collection. However, the attention should be brought to how the inner shirt is styled — unbuttoned all the way with one hem tucked to the side to give a stuffy look an easy air.

Look 68: While these sequins evening look has been a regular at the Alta Moda collections, the Dolce&Gabbana Spring Summer 2022 collection has a more relaxed fit for the serious look.

Look 81: Anybody ready to become a Dolce&Gabbana angel? [Winks]

Look 75: In the thread of opulence, this look is serving both statement jacket and pants — probably best to do it one at a time for most men.

Look 78: The contemporary look is kept on a distressed denim treated with gilded brocades, then styled with a simple, loose T-shirt — showing of underwear band optional.
