1983 was a memorable year for the world — the world’s first mobile phone was launched by Motorola, Michael Jackson released hit sensations Beat it and Billie Jean and watchmakers Swatch released their iconic GZ010 Jellyfish watch. The watch was designed by Marlyse Schmid, featuring a transparent watch case that revealed the watch’s inner workings. It was also characterised by the colourful watch hands in eye popping red, yellow and blue.
37 years on, the Jellyfish makes its big return in literal sense as it is reimagined in the spirit of the Big Bold. The watch diameter has been bumped up dramatically from 34mm to 47mm, turning it from subtle accessory to a must-have statement watch.
Apart from size, the Big Bold Jelly retains the hallmarks of the original Jellyfish — a transparent crown and case that proudly showcases the innards of the watch, the tricolour Bauhaus style hands and translucent silicone straps. The new Big Bold Jelly epitomises what Swatch is all about with the brand’s increased technological prowess — no-frills, fun watchmaking. The Big Bold is available in a myriad of colours as well, as seen on the wrists of the Island Boys Collective.
