Grand Seiko Channels the Beauty of Shizukuishi

Grand Seiko’s classic mechanical GMT gets a seasonal update with two new dials inspired by the natural beauty of Shizukuishi

By Men's Folio

Within the vast and varied catalogue of Grand Seiko, few models hold as much sway over the enthusiast community as the Elegance GMT SBGM221. With its ivory dial, tempered blue hand, and rounded case, it has long been the gold standard for a dressy (not dress), travel-ready wristwatch. Now, the brand is expanding this beloved family with two new references that channel the changing seasons of Japan: the SBGM255 Snowdrop and SBGM257 Moondrop.

Grand Seiko SBGM255 Snowdrop

While the architecture remains familiarly classic, the execution is entirely fresh, bringing the textures of winter and autumn to the wrist. Now, Grand Seiko is no stranger to finding inspiration in the natural world surrounding its manufacturing sites, which is why these SBGM models might give you a sense of deja vue. For these new models, the focus shifts to the transient beauty of the seasons changing near the Grand Seiko Studio Shizukuishi.

The SBGM255 Snowdrop captures the moment winter begins to yield to spring. As the snow melts under the brightening sun, it forms droplets that glisten with promise – a phenomenon beautifully rendered on the white patterned dial. It is a bright and optimistic visage that hints at the verdant life soon to emerge.

Grand Seiko SBGM257 Moondrop

In contrast, the SBGM257 Moondrop looks to the other side of the calendar. It evokes a crisp autumn night where moonlight fills the sky and dew forms in the cooling air. The dial here is a rich, textured blue, capturing the “resplendent gleam” of dew in the moonlight and the deep richness of fall.

Both new models share the same case architecture that has made the Grand Seiko mechanical GMT a staple since 2010. The stainless steel case measures a classic 39.5mm, featuring the elegant round contours and tapered lugs that trace their lineage back to the very first Grand Seiko of 1960.

The “Snowdrop” features a rhodium-plated 24-hour hand tempered to a beautiful shade of blue, providing a sharp, cold contrast to the white dial. Meanwhile, the “Moondrop” pairs its navy dial with a 24-hour hand in a luxurious gold colour, echoing the warmth of the harvest moon. Both are fitted with box sapphire crystals that reinforce the vintage aesthetic and come on crocodile leather straps with buckles – a fittingly dressy choice for this collection.

Inside, the watches are powered by the robust Caliber 9S66. This automatic movement is a “true” GMT, allowing the local hour hand to be adjusted in one-hour increments without stopping the seconds hand – an important feature for travellers. Visible through the sapphire crystal caseback, the movement offers an impressive power reserve (see below) and an accuracy rating of +5 to -3 seconds per day.
