130 years of the Louis Vuitton Monogram. That’s not only a testament to Louis Vuitton’s brand power in the last century, but also a reflection of LV’s strength as a cultural powerhouse around the globe. Letters ‘L’ and ‘V’. Combined. What could arguably be the luxury monogram pattern that started the whole Logomania craze since American couturier Dapper Dan’s designs hit the streets of Harlem in the 80’s, to the pattern being not just spotted on just garments, but skateboards, glassware, and paraphernalia that has made itself relevant every year since its existence, the LV Monogram is, without a doubt, a textbook example of pop culture.
To celebrate the festivities, Louis Vuitton brings us back to where it all started, with three new capsule collections that honour the legacy of the iconic Monogram. Titled the Monogram Origine, VVN, and the Time Trunk anniversary collections, the capsules are meant to be a discovery of Louis Vuittons heritage, imbued with the future. Here’s a quick breakdown of the three:
Monogram Origine
The Monogram Origine is a special line of trunks and bags that revisits the original 1896 pattern in a new canvas weave of linen and cotton blend. Handbags like the iconic Speedy, Alma, and Neverfull get the new canvas coating treatment, alongside several new brown and pastel colourways.
VVN
Short for Vache Végétale Naturelle, the VVN line is an inversion of the classic Monogram bag: it takes the leather normally used for the trim and makes it the primary material of the handbag, using natural, unprocessed leather that develops a distinctive patina over time.
Time Trunk
The Time Trunk collection uses trompe-l’œil techniques to mimic the aged textures and metal hardware of vintage Louis Vuitton trunks on models such as the Speedy 30 Soft, Noé, and Alma GM. The line originally debuted during Nicolas Ghesquière’s Fall 2018 womenswear show and returned for Fall 2024 in celebration of his tenth year at the house. The collection is meant as Louis Vuitton’s ongoing dialogue between tradition and modernity
You can expect the LV Monogram to take on an even greater prominence next year — this marks only the first chapter of what the Maison has in store.
