What makes some of these local or global creatives tick? In this weekly column, Andrew Menon of Marlo Bespoke shares his favourite things.
1. Finely Crafted Suits And Casual/Formal Menswear: I appreciate the effort and skill required to craft the perfect garment and am obsessed by how fine fabric can fall naturally to accentuate the defining and positive features of a gentleman’s physique that only the person wearing can truly feel and experience the difference.
2. Good Scotch and Great Wine: I have a preference for single malt scotch of medium maturity, my favorites include Balvenie 14 & 16, Dalmore 15 and Glenlivet 15. I rarely stray far from the comfort and familiarity these four provide and am obsessed by their varied taste profiles and characteristics, which trigger fond memories of yesteryears.
As for wine, I like old-world Italian. More precisely and almost exclusively, Amarone! They pair well and I love the boldness in flavour. If not for Amarone, my other go-to would be a good Napa Valley cabernet sauvignon.
3. Interiors and Fittings: I am obsessed with how elements of nature can be combined harmoniously to give life to ordinary spaces like the Marlo boutique. This space was designed remotely as I was not in Singapore then. When I finally saw the boutique almost two years later, and see my vision and sketches come to life, I was beyond touched and absolutely in awe.
4) His Kids: I am obsessed with my kids and what goes on in their heads. Not a day goes by that I don’t think of them or how I can be a better father. I am intrigued by the simple yet delightful conversations we have about the most random and mundane things, which somehow rule their existence for the foreseeable five hours before fading into oblivion forever. 5) Bettering Personal Bests: These tend to be physical/endurance (i.e. generally running and swimming) or mental (i.e. different business ventures or personal development projects) high watermarks and I am obsessed with putting myself out there, and pushing boundaries to feel more alive!
