Revering The Cutting Edge of Homme Plissé Issey Miyake

  • By Charmaine Tan

Homme Plissé Issey Miyake’s SS24 collection celebrates the pleat in the wide, accordion take on the Edge Ensemble.

What makes a piece of clothing a staple? While the overuse of the word in the fashion-sphere has whittled its general translation down to “basic”, the dictionary defines the word to instead carry the nuance of importance and centrality. Hence, it’s no better fit than to refer to the pleated legacy of Issey Miyake as the staple of contemporary fashion, proving the reverential designer’s singular endeavour to make infinite the design of the pleat an unprecedented feat of creativity meets technological innovation.

In the moving spectacle that was the Homme Plissé Issey Miyake Spring Summer 2024 show, one of the chapters that contributed to the kaleidoscopic haze of exacting silhouettes is the Edge Ensemble — which presents just how essential the pleat is to the modern man, a reinterpretation of the suit for someone who masterfully balances work and play. Featuring wide, accordion pleats all over, the Edge Ensemble is woven from recycled polyester, and carries a gentle gloss while feeling dry to the touch.

This gifts the matching set a sense of lightness that not only softens the formalities of a suit, but also matches the hum of Singapore’s buzzy hot-and-humid climate. But not without the innovative touch of Miyake’s edge. This season, the Edge Coat also gets a refresher in shape, now adding two new styles of a trench coat and a hooded jacket to the Edge repertoire.
