Accessories for men are no longer boring. Gone are the single-dimensioned pieces of aggressive and bold metal; today’s fashion climate accommodates both delicate trinkets and even bolder and chunkier chains, the types of jewellery no longer just restricted to a watch and wedding band. It’s also other rings, necklaces, bracelets and even earrings.
It’s not just about the growing men’s jewellery scene though. Women’s accessories now incur spin-offs for men, as well as are themselves included in the same accessory rotations for him too. It’s natural given the world’s acceptance of more diverse forms of self expression, but this is more than just looking into the future — some of the recent tasteful selections, like Saint Laurent’s Rhinestone Egg Ring, both exude character while being reminiscent of the past. Specifically of signet rings passed down the generations.
Before rings in general adopted the more abstract way of self-expression, the signet ring was first used as long ago as 3500 BC. They literally served to authenticate and differentiate a bloodline from another; usually emblazoned with a family crest that would be frequently used to stamp or sign documents, the rings had a certain air about them — grand, storied and lavished, they were representative of a family’s social regard, and were usually worn by people of influence.
Similarly, this ring continues to be celebrated for the same reasons as the modern eye today. Except for the part where the crest was is an open canvas, for logomania to shine and for the more sentimental ones to DIY their own designs.
The Rhinestone Egg Ring, oxidised to give an aged look, looks the part with its majestic rhinestone-encrusted oval dome and textured setting. While this comes from the women’s collection, its large size would rest well on larger hands, and its rough-cut gem look has the balanced nuance most of men’s jewellery today strives to have.
Anthony Vaccarello’s Saint Laurent lays praise on the rebellious gender fluidity of dressing, and this ring is no exception — it’s simple yet detailed in construction, and intentional in textural contrasts.
