Everything from the past is having its moment in fashion (on TikTok at least), yet again. However, this new surge in trend recycling is not quite like what we have seen, nor is it easy to figure out.

It started first with the Balenciaga Le City bag, which had its status as a relic rescinded as a style trophy for youths today. Then came the studs, paired with jeans doused in washes so vintage its pockets were meant only to fit a BlackBerry. Or the dreaded “slimification” of denim, as seen with Calvin Klein’s latest Authentic Straight line from the Hedi Slimane school of thought. It was not long before showing the bands of one’s underwear would replace the need for proper belts. Wearing wired headphones is deemed cool. And when the bags started to come sized in tandem with stock market habits, it meant that resurfacing images of specific 2000s eras soundtracked by Cocteau Twins with fit checks on TikTok meant only one thing — the kids are clearly bored with the new.
