What makes some of these local or global creatives tick? In this weekly column, graphic design trio Hause share their favourite things.
1. Games: We have recently been into playing FPS games, specifically Valorant. The intensity of a five-person team fighting another, making decisions, and planning for an attack/defense makes us feel some sort of adrenaline.
The satisfaction of winning makes us want to play more and the bitter taste of losing wants us to play better. We have a lot of fun either way.
2. Memes: The whole identity of Hause derives from memes and the internet culture. Our love for them has led us to create our designs as meme-ish as possible. In general, we like the idea of an image that has no direct context to the text on it, yet it makes so much sense.
IS THAT TRUE DESIGN COMMUNICATION? LMAO?
3. Postmodernism: From Duchamp to Sottsass, the postmodernist movement made us who we are as creatives. Ingrained in our brains is the method of using design and art to go against a certain standard. We enjoy pushing the boundaries with radical ideas and methods.
4: No context images Daily info consumption and the vernacular of our everyday lives are inspirations to us. We enjoy the fakeness of social media advertisements and the realness of the hawker center at lunchtime.
Even the mundane rubbish disposal area is always changing. In our eyes, it is a gallery.
5. Films/Animations: All of us have different tastes in movies but we all can agree that we enjoy experimental films. We feel inspired by the strong visuals and bizarre compositions from films like Paprika and Enter the Void.
6. Album Covers: Similar to films, we have different tastes when it comes to music. But we all can agree on what a nice album cover is. We share our current music or band obsessions with one another.
It’s always an interesting experience because it’s not the sort of music that each of us listens to by default so what catches our attention first is the album cover art.
7. T-shirts: We really love T-shirts! Like, really weird design T-shirts that can be found at thrift shops. We started Hause with the intention of printing T-shirts for ourselves without the thought of an audience and to be honest, we still do.
To us, a T-shirt is like a walking poster or even a comic that anyone can notice and laugh at.
8. Friends: We get inspiration from our friends a lot, both in real life and online. Our friends from @eat_ripe and the community of creatives that consist of designers and non-designers are really sick because everyone has their own way of creating. The ability to create without expert knowledge and not be afraid of the outcome is what we enjoy seeing.
