Dolce&Gabbana Finds The Heart In Italian Craftsmanship

  • By Vanessa Grace Ng

In the heart of Italy, Dolce&Gabbana presents an exhibition that pays reverence to the cultures embedded within its brand DNA.

In achieving forty years of design excellence, it would be easy to look a luxury fashion house’s milestones for all that one can see. For one, there is the continued upkeep of traditional craft complexities. And standout collections that cement a house’s legacy for brilliant brand narratives that are less said, but more seen. For Dolce&Gabbana, the vision of seeing — not looking — is found in the hypothetical absence of Italian culture.

Dolce&Gabbana present From The Heart To The Hands, a culmination of its odes to its artistic genesis, and the things that have inspired it. Exhibiting Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana’s four decades of inspiration reveals the saturated customs of Italy at the very core of Dolce&Gabbana’s philosophies. At a glance, one might be able to name the more obvious cultures that have been interwoven into the house’s DNA: ornate Baroque references, or the Milanese Renaissance (which took the mantle for its 2018 Alta Moda presentation). But Dolce&Gabbana reveal its creative spark to originate from even the most unlikely of nationalistic adoration. Mediums of invention are unravelled to their cores: architecture joins the country’s topography, ballet, music, and opera at the pit of the house’s craftsmanship identity. Each sub-culture to be explored, and then bloomed into fantastical artistic interpretations. Each finding its place in a Dolce&Gabbana creation, collection or narrative.

Comprehensively, The Heart To The Hands exhibit programmes Dolce&Gabbana’s non-linear discovery of Italian heritage into a visually striking walk-through. Personal revelations of La Dolce Vita passions, of both Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana breathe context into what may just pass off to be supremely-executed couture techniques. One might get away with time-stamping the exhibit as a 40-year celebration of Dolce&Gabbana excellence, but with The Heart To The Hands, Dolce&Gabbana insist to proffer that this is a timeless spectacle of Italian mastery.
