Frankly, the Men’s Folio Grooming Awards 2022 has not changed much since its inauguration in 2020. Its metrics are still yardsticks that have not shrunk in length — does a product feel and work as they claim to do besides looking good on the table? If we are to play spot the difference, then there are smarter upgrades to the daily staples we use such as serums for the eyes, a greater focus on makeup removal, hydration, and many new solutions to scent oneself.
There are, of course, even more choices this year — roughly 528 nominations were made across 80 brands. We narrowed it down to 286 products from 68 brands, of which were tested by this panel of eight — Managing Editor Asaph Low, Deputy Editor Bryan Goh, Makeup Artists Eric Tan, Larry Yeo, Priscelia Wong, Sha Shamsi, and grooming enthusiasts Smita de Souza and Aiman Haikal — resulting in 68 winners that were deeply vetted, tested, and of course, loved.
Here, the best unisex, citrus, rose, night and green fragrance winners.
BEST UNISEX FRAGRANCE — Byredo Inflorescence
“This is what beautiful unisex perfumes should be like: light, refreshing, floral but without the cloying sweet notes,” says Smita before adding that it smells “clean” enough for hot weather wear.
BEST CITRUS FRAGRANCE — Acqua di Parma Mirto Di Panarea
With notes of the tanginess of citrus fruits, woody “roundness” and fresh florals, Asaph akin it to “a vibrant fresh scent that gives him a sense of the landscapes, island life and the sea of Italy.”
BEST ROSE FRAGRANCE — Maison Francis Kurkdjian L’Homme À la Rose
The “wonderfully photorealistic roses” as described by Bryan play well with the tartness of patchouli and spices that makes this fragrance “a dreamlike symbiosis of scents.”
BEST NIGHT FRAGRANCE — Kilian Paris L’heure Verte
“A masculine sweet fragrance that has the green notes of absinthe dancing with a soft, spicy patchouli,” says Larry about this fragrance from the House’s iconic The Liquors Collection.
BEST GREEN FRAGRANCE — Malin+Goetz Stem
Besides “smelling like the best green fragrance” she has ever experienced, Priscelia also likes that its blend of jasmine, stems greens and mandarin leaf “is neither overpowering nor overly sweet.”
