Men’s Folio Grooming Awards 2022: Best Sunshield Cleanser
Frankly, the Men’s Folio Grooming Awards 2022 has not changed much since its inauguration in 2020. Its metrics are still yardsticks that have not shrunk in length — does a product feel and work as they claim to do besides looking good on the table? If we are to play spot the difference, then there are smarter upgrades to the daily staples we use such as serums for the eyes, a greater focus on makeup removal, hydration, and many new solutions to scent oneself.

There are, of course, even more choices this year — roughly 528 nominations were made across 80 brands. We narrowed it down to 286 products from 68 brands, of which were tested by this panel of eight — Managing Editor Asaph Low, Deputy Editor Bryan Goh, Makeup Artists Eric TanLarry YeoPriscelia WongSha Shamsi, and grooming enthusiasts Smita de Souza and Aiman Haikal — resulting in 68 winners that were deeply vetted, tested, and of course, loved.

Here, the best sunshield cleanser award winner: the Dr. W!SH Homecare Face First available at Lloyds Medical Group & Avenue + Co Medical Aesthetics.

The science of the Dr. W!SH Homecare Face First cleanser is simple. One just needs to dispense the cleanser into his palms (the rich lather can even be extended down to his neck), apply it to the face, and then wash it off for all-day sun protection or 80 minutes if he is doing water sports. This technology, however — called “wash on sunscreen” literally or metaphorically — is not new. It has been thought to be first invented in 2016 in the west and to the non-believers, has been approved by the FDA itself.

When one uses a “wash on sunscreen”, the product creates a semi-occlusive layer of sun-shielding chemicals that partially inhibits the absorption of everything used after. Some think it is magic for a minimalistic routine but others, prefer the complete absorption of actives.

The Dr W!sh Homecare Face First cleanser, compared to its compatriots, considers what it can do beyond just sun protection. Its shielding protections are already prevalent — chemical sunscreen ingredients like octocrylene, octinoxate, and avobenzone that are at the top of the list — but to correct the complication of typical formulas of its kind, it also includes anti-oxidants and moisturisers.

Powered at an SPF of 30, the brand’s clinical studies prove that it is a solid solution to sunburns. Its SPF 30 rating on the bottle powers up to a 32 when applied at 0.5mg/cm2 as compared to topical sunscreens that dip to a dismal 2.7 despite its lofty strength of 50. The anti-oxidants — ranging from pomegranate extract that protects against photodamage and burdock root that is an anti-inflammatory to anti-ageing grape extract — and moisturisers (glycerine, shea, silicon oil and Polyquatenium-1) in the Dr. W!SH Homecare Face First cleanser means that one is already doing two to three skincare steps post-lather. The proof is in the reflection post-wash: no immediate signs of sun damage when one goes out in the sun and brighter, clearer, and stronger skin with repeated usage.
