Thomas Ng talks about his collaboration with Thai indie singer Phum Viphurit for their song “Pills” and his dreams for the Asian music industry.
The music scene in Asia has been steadily growing – with an increasing number of talented individuals and groups producing tracks with greater production value and more heart, driven by pure passion. Gone are the days where Asian artists have to be successful in Western countries to gain legitimacy and recognition.
Asiatic Records, launched under Warner Music, is a label dedicated to supporting hip-hop and rap talent from the region, with “asiatic.wav volume. 1” being the first of many installations from Asiatic Records to feature up-and-coming music artists from Asia.
Thomas Ng, currently based in Boston, is an emerging R&B artist, whose ‘Duet Me’ videos on TikTok garnered him international attention. His debut EP “3am”, co-produced by Producer Joe Bae, also went viral on TikTok. In this interview, we speak to Thomas about his new song, released with Thai indie singer Phum Viphurit, titled “Pills” which debuted in “asiatic.wav volume. 1”.
“Pills” is a sentimental and slow track, co-arranged and co-produced by the two singers through a truly collaborative process of mutual respect and constant feedback. At the heart of the song is a very personal experience: Thomas wrote the song based on a relationship he had with someone who relied on medication to help them.

A soft letter of love, the lyrics of “Pills” are heartfelt, deep from Thomas’ heart and soul as a musician and a person. The Berklee College of Music graduate professed: “I want the listeners to look at and listen to the lyrics hopefully to uplift the ones who are down and bring hope to the world.”

Different from his usual perspective through sound, Thomas explored an alternate facet of his musicality through the collaborative melody. Given his fresh foray into the music industry, the R&B singer-songwriter reveals: “I hope to branch out into, and popularise more types of music and genres in Asia to bring a younger, newer sound to Asia.”
