#MensFolioMeets Dr Shane Abucewicz-Tan About the FOREO UFO 2

  • By Bryan Goh

Yes, Dr Shane Abucewicz-Tan is the “hot dude on the MRT who happens to be reading a book” and yes, the newly launched FOREO UFO 2 is a skincare gamechanger. In under two minutes, you can say goodbye to all the things that are impeding your Tinder selfies — irregular skin tone, deep fine lines, breakouts, sunburns and dark eye circles.

Here, Dr Shane Abucewicz-Tan takes us through exactly what makes the FOREO UFO 2 that damn good. And can we just reiterate — a two-minute spa-like treatment. We’re sold.

Hello Dr Shane Abucewicz-Tan, w’d like to put you in a spot. You have to pitch the FOREO UFO 2 in less than 20 words or less and your life depends on it. Let’s go!
Ah that’s an interesting way to do it. How about: the high-tech, clinically relevant and closest thing to an out-of-clinic home facial you can get!

What then is your philosophy when it comes to looking your best self? Do you perhaps think things like the golden ratio are quite antiquated?
I personally believe effort in self-care coupled with an introspective nature, brings us close to looking, and being, your best self.

I am a strong believer in the aesthetic harmony of everything! From the balance of curves and corners on cars, to that on watches, and most definitely the face. Proportions are everything, and that makes us individually unique. That being said, the notion of the Golden Ratio and things like absolute symmetry defining beauty is something I cannot come to terms with; there might be some relevance in their application but one might be foolish to take them as gospel truths.

What ingredient or product do you think we need to use more of?
I am a strong proponent of all-kill products or procedures — things that solve a multitude of issues at a go. And for me the go-to that I always ensure my patients get enough of is that of retin or retinol-based products. Yes they can be irritating initially, but you will reap the rewards in due time.

What excites you the most about skincare in 2021? Were there any new developments (besides the UFO 2 obviously) that made you go “holy shit I should have invented this!”
This is a tough one. I’m not one to get flustered over fads; I still believe skin care should be simple, directed and dynamic. The reason why the UFO 2 appealed is because it is a take on the existing tried and tested modalities — skin occlusion (masking), temperature regulation (stimulation for heat and calming for cold), and LED Therapy.

There is one thing that interests me now though, and that is in skincare delivery systems. That’s one rather complex and interesting area I would love to delve into in the future.

A full-spectrum of LED lights, T-Sonic pulsations, upgraded tech, faster heating and optimised app-led treatments — the FOREO UFO 2 is like a spa treatment in your hands.

Speaking of the FOREO UFO 2, the four modes seem great. Would you encourage someone to use all four at one go?
Again, I am quite by the book — use what has evidence and what you need for the moment. Hence I tend to choose my own modes — red light and warmth for stimulation and absorptive roles, and blue light and cold for irritated or inflamed skin types. I always advise my patients to be dynamic in both their skin care routine as well as their facials — the skin can be a petty organ with swaying moods.

If someone has little time in the evening, which mode would you advise them to use?
I think the answer above speaks for itself!

Which mode then do you personally use?
I personally select warmth with red light (twice, if there’s time), followed by a round of cooling to end it off.

Would you encourage the use of the UFO 2 on other body parts then?
If time isn’t the issue, why not!

Lastly, let’s do question one again… but for the FOREO UFO 2 mini.
The high-tech, clinically relevant and closest thing to an out-of-clinic home facial you can get  — and keep in your pocket! [Laughs]
