At New York Fashion Week, Club Kids Take the Stage

Save the robots.

Messy, lived in, and authentic—this is the club kid hair of the future at PRIVATE POLICY’s SS24 show.

If London is the capital for fashion eccentricities, Milan the go-to city for taileur, and Paris where the artisanal flou originates, then New York City is the melting pot of all these influences. While the naysayers would claim that the American capital’s fashion is often staid or unimaginative, the electric currents of the underground have never been more exciting. Specifically, the underground of the ’90s with all its glory, gaudiness, and gorgeous creatures of the night who stalked around in clubs like Save the Robots and The Village Underground.

This sentiment — a kind of manifest-your-dreams-into-reality with an authentic slant — has not been lost on PRIVATE POLICY New York for their SS24 collection with the hair being the finisher for its founders Siying Qu and Haoran Li vision. Sculpted by Kien Hoang, the Principal Artist of Global Design of Oribe, the first reference point for the hair “images of cool NYC club kids” which gave the look “a lived-in one that looks great when slept in and washed less.” Suiting all types of face shapes and working on all haircuts, here, Hoang takes us through the steps.

Oribe Mystify Restyling Spray Gold Lust

First, prep the hair with a spray that has heat protection properties and enough hold to allow you to enhance the texture you already have.

While Hoang mentions that “the look is effortless and easy to achieve on all hair types and is perfect for any occasion.”, those with pin-straight strands can use a large curling iron to create bends and waves for a tousled, “un-done” look. Next, spray on an anti-humidity hairspray for an all-day hold and a weightless texture.

To add volume, apply a powder-based spray with lifting properties directly to the roots, then back-comb at the crown about three inches off the scalp. Next, mist a holding hairspray on the crown and quickly tap sections upwards from mid-shafts to roots with a flat iron for added volume and fullness. Embrace the flyaways too that come with partying all night.

Finally, spray on a beach wave spray that also imbues a shine to the hair ends. Congrats, you’re now a club kid of the future.
