An enduring partnership often makes room to coexist and evolve. Since welcoming Korean superstar Lee Dong Wook into its ambassador family in March 2022, Tissot has embraced stylistic and cultural differences between the Korean and Swiss watchmaker. After four years, that tension has blossomed into something more tangible, a personal expression even, with the launch of the Tissot PRX Lee Dong Wook Special Edition.
“The collaboration between Tissot and WOOKDONG is something I had hoped to make happen for a long time, so I’m very happy to finally see it come to life,” Lee Dong Wook shared. “I’m deeply grateful to Tissot, and it feels even more meaningful as we worked closely together throughout the process, from selecting the watch model to developing the design. I hope my fans will enjoy this collaboration as much as I do, and I look forward to continuing my journey with Tissot.”
The choice of the Tissot PRX cannot be overstated for such a collaboration. Since its release, or should we say re-edition, in early 2021, the model has been one of Tissot’s shining stars. The modern-day interpretation of the 1978 creation further bridges the gap between what its predecessor set out to achieve and its PRX abbreviation: Precision, Robustness, and water resistance (X in Roman numerals represents 10 bar, or 100 meters of water resistance).
Much of that was achieved through a function-led approach which inadvertently raised its aesthetic qualities. Good ol’ stainless steel, prized for its workhorse qualities, is the natural choice for the Tissot PRX. Although it is unassuming to say the least, it reveals its charm when machined well. The multipiece stainless steel case complemented by an integrated bracelet allows a seamless transition from case to bracelet. The watch’s multitude of facets alternate between vertically brushed, rounded surfaces, and polished bevels, allowing an eye-catching interplay of light. A sapphire crystal, Tissot’s automatic Powermatic 80 calibre, and a 100m water resistance with an improved gasket complete what is a thoroughbred interpretation for Tissot.
While numerous iterations of the PRX have since been unveiled, including a Damascus edition, chronograph, and smaller case dimensions, the Tissot PRX Lee Dong Wook Special Edition takes inspiration from WOOKDONG. Instead of the 40mm version, the collaborative piece is housed in a 35mm case that matches WOOKDONG’s cutesy stature. The watch’s white lacquered dial echoes the actor’s beloved puppy-like baby lion mascot, while the four distinctive peach-accented hour indices match WOOKDONG’s ears. While the other indices remain white in daylight, they all glow pink in darker conditions thanks to custom pink Super-LumiNova®. On top of the de riguer integrated steel bracelet, the Tissot PRX Lee Dong Wook Special Edition features an additional white rubber strap accented with pink stitching.
Although WOOKDONG is the foil to Lee Dong Wook’s persona, Tissot WOOKDONG was created as WOOKDONG’s companion. Tissot’s black-and-red brand colours make a distinctive statement on its overalls, ears, and tail. WOOKDONG’s appearance on the watch’s seconds hand and caseback is the cherry on top of a partnership built on shared values of excellence and mutual respect. Beyond serving as a symbol of Lee Dong Wook’s ambassadorship, the Tissot PRX Lee Dong Wook Special Edition takes on extra significance, with its slated release date falling on Lee Dong Wook’s birthday, 6 November.
