The Tissot PRX has come a long way since its storied beginnings in 1978, when its sleek stainless steel case with an integrated bracelet captured the imagination of many. Its PRX abbreviation represents Precision, Robustness and 10 (X in Roman numerals) atm water resistance, hallmarks which were integral to the collection’s success. Since its fairytale comeback four years ago, the Tissot PRX has been swiftly embraced as a modern classic and bears all the essential ingredients of an icon in the making. After presenting the PRX collection in 42mm (chronograph), 40mm, 35mm and 25mm diameters, Tissot unveils a bold new chapter of the Tissot PRX 38 with its automatic editions.
For the first time, the PRX collection ventures into featherlight titanium and richly textured Damascus stainless steel. Beyond the refreshed case dimensions, these materials push the icon’s heritage into fresh, expressive territory, proving that evolution can be compelling when an already-beloved watch dares to reinvent itself.
Famed for its beautiful, undulating lines, Damascus steel is equally prized for its physical properties as for its aesthetics. What is most commonly used these days in high-end kitchen knives reprises its role as a watch case material, bringing its strength, durability, and artisanal prestige to the fore. Unlike Damascus steel of old, modern-day manufacturing methods have drastically changed how the alloy is created. Tissot first creates Damascus steel blocks by combining two grades of stainless steel powders and subjecting them to an advanced isostatic pressing process. The stainless steel powders are layered in alternating order before being pressed under high temperature and equal pressure from all directions. During this stage, the powders bond at the atomic level to form a dense, multilayered block of steel comprising 70 successive layers. The block is then CNC-machined to create watch cases and dials with the signature swirling, watery motifs, each truly unique and distinct from another. Tissot later finishes the components with polished and satin surfaces for a striking interplay of light and shadow, and pairs it with an interchangeable leather strap with a Damascus steel buckle. On the Tissot PRX Damascus 38MM dial, the Damascus motif is contrasted with baton-shaped hour and minute hands, a black second hand, and black-nickel indexes for legibility.
On the other hand, the Tissot PRX Titanium 38MM editions, introduced titanium to the PRX collection for the first time, commanding attention with their quiet confidence and resolve. Beloved for being lightweight yet remarkably strong, the watch case and integrated bracelet are crafted from the featherlight material. The result is an effortlessly comfortable wrist companion that is ready for any adventure without ever feeling cumbersome. Whether one veers towards the deep blue waffle dial with nickel baton hands and applied indexes, or the anthracite waffle dial punctuated with rose-gold-toned hands and indexes, both dial colours perfectly complement the industrial-cool grey hues of titanium.
Within the watch lies another of Tissot’s trusty innovations, the automatic Powermatic 80 calibre with a Nivachron™ balance spring to combat magnetism interference and withstand shocks and temperature changes. As with previous iterations, the Tissot PRX 38mm pieces are rated to 100m water resistance for added reliability.
With the introduction of Tissot PRX 38 automatic editions in titanium and Damascus steel, the Tissot PRX proves that innovation and heritage can coexist seamlessly. These watches honour the collection’s foundational principles while carrying the PRX legacy forward with a modern touch.
