You might wonder: why would a Japanese brand, already well-established in Asia and firmly rooted in global pop culture, choose to open a flagship on avenue de Champs‑Élysées in Paris for its largest strategic move yet? For Onitsuka Tiger, the opening of its new boutique represents more than just physical expansion. It’s a strategic play aimed at cementing its global repositioning as a fashion-first brand with luxury aspirations.
Though long associated with its athletic origins and iconic Mexico 66 sneakers, Onitsuka Tiger has spent the past decade undergoing a steady transformation under the creative direction of Andrea Pompilio and CEO Ryoji Shoda. While retaining elements of its sportswear DNA, the brand has steadily leaned into fashion territory, showing its mainline collections at Milan Fashion Week, pursuing high-profile collaborations, and investing in storytelling that bridges Japanese craftsmanship with contemporary design.
So it doesn’t come as a surprise that its latest expansion into Europe with the opening of boutiques in Milan, London, and most recently, Barcelona, Paris would be its next eye of pursuit. Because as one of the world’s most prestigious retail avenues, the avenue has long offered tenants unparalleled visibility and cultural cachet. Hallmark names on the avenue include global powerhouses like Louis Vuitton and Cartier, and for Onitsuka Tiger, placing a permanent flagship here means their eyes on being a global fashion player are set.

Situated at 25 avenue des Champs‑Élysées in Paris, the new Onitsuka Tiger boutique takes over an 18th-century hôtel particulier that once hosted the Hôtel Onitsuka Tiger pop-up in 2023. That pop-up served as a proof-of-concept for local engagement, allowing the brand to test the market, refine its message, and assess its resonance within one of the most competitive retail zones in the world. The positive reception likely helped justify the investment in a full-scale, permanent location on what is arguably the most symbolic retail street in Europe.

The two-story boutique was designed by Milan-based architecture studio STUDIODINICATALDI and reflects Onitsuka Tiger’s distinctive Yellow Concept aesthetic. Raw concrete, sleek illuminated surfaces, and bold yellow-tinted glass panels create a striking contrast against the historic architectural shell. At the center of the space, a sculptural installation encased in yellow glass serves as a focal point for new season products, particularly items from the brand’s runway collections, contemporary footwear, and Japan-made DENIVITA™ denim line. The boutique also introduces Café Onitsuka Tiger on the ground floor, offering Japanese-inspired beverages and artisanal snacks with a subtle Parisian influence.
“The opening of our flagship store on the Champs‑Élysées is a pivotal moment for our brand,” said Shoda. “Designing a retail space that harmonises with the iconic streetscape of the Champs‑Élysées while utilising a historic building cherished by the local community is a significant challenge. As a cultural brand that bridges Japan and the world, our goal is to create a store and environment that honours the essence of the Champs‑Élysées and coexists with the city’s rich culture.”

To commemorate the launch, Onitsuka Tiger has released an exclusive edition of the MEXICO 66™ NM from its premium NIPPON MADE™ collection available only at the Paris flagship.
The timing is also notable. In an era where DTC and e-commerce strategies dominate headlines, the physical brick and mortar boutique remains a powerful branding tool, particularly in luxury and fashion where in-person experience can be a key differentiator. By investing in a marquee flagship, Onitsuka Tiger is signalling confidence in its global potential and a desire to play on the same stage as legacy European houses.
Thus, the brand’s new store is less about footprint and more about positioning. With the Champs‑Élysées Paris flagship, Onitsuka Tiger is making it clear that it no longer sees itself as just a heritage sneaker label, but as a design-driven brand with global cultural ambition. The Paris opening is a stake in the ground and marks the next phase of the brand’s evolution into a serious contender in the modern fashion landscape which, by now, they have long been a part of.
