Art is at the heart of Braun Büffel’s latest Spring Summer 2022 collection, as its translation of Ugo Rondinone — the New York based mixed-media artist widely known for his contemporary paintings and jaw-dropping installations — works render modular dressing to its limits with a range of bags that transforms as wearable art. For the German leather maker, this earnest move towards decisive, clean and conceptual products through art signals a strong return, which will ultimately change the trajectory of the house’s future.

Similarly, we interpret that ethos through music. Singaporean rapper and singer Fariz Jabba best represents that passionate, coming of age tale of a championing voice in the local music industry that is set to break the worldwide stage. We speak to him on what it means to be a musician today, the resources lacking for young artistes and how the general public can better contribute to the scene.

The last time we interviewed you, you shared about your personal heroes and what that meant to you. Let us in on what you have been up to since then.
I’ve been doing a ton of studying and observing the little things that strike an emotion. Focusing on the response, listening more. A bunch of planning for what’s coming in my artistry and a whole lot of family time. I feel grateful where i’m at.

What moves you?
Loyalty.

When the live music scene in Singapore and the region recovers, will we be expecting you to go on tour?
Definitely. I haven’t stepped foot in Malaysia or anywhere for the whole pandemic. Time to catch up with the world!

What is the most important thing a young musician should know. Is there anything you would like to share?
Stay young in your heart no matter how old you get. Truly, you can’t teach a man what a man thinks he already knows. Curiosity is your centre!

As an experienced artiste now, what are some resources you think our local arts body can provide to better enable aspiring musicians to pursue a career in music?
I like this question. There’s a lot of attention needed for our music scene, especially in its funding. There’s too much raw and undeveloped talent in Singapore for us to ignore. Sharpness within our craft grows through integrating communities, which are built around shows, festivals and parties. We need to entertain and make people smile! Diamonds in the rough are all in that crowd.

How can I then, as a member of public, help to make our local music industry better, and perhaps even matter (if we are being frank on the matter)?
Come to the shows. Buy tickets. Support and buy merchandise. Share, document your experiences. Repeat!

For most artistes — especially the young ones — it has become more accessible to explore the form. You have platforms such as Soundcloud, Bandcamp, and even Spotify that has made the process of reaching a desired audience even more approachable than our parent’s generation, doing away with the luxury of record buying. I would imagine if I was skilled as a musician, I could pull out my phone right now, download an app, and make a song right away. As a young rapper and singer, tell us your thoughts on what you think it means to make music today.
There’s absolutely no reason for anybody to say they shouldn’t make music just because they aren’t “professionals”. We live in a very fortunate time in our lives where everything is highly accessible. The medium of expression is of such quality and convenience and it takes such little time for us to create something. We are so lucky! Let’s make full use of our strengths.
