The Gift of Forty: the Panerai Luminor Marina QuarantaPanerai unveils the Luminor Marina Quaranta with refreshed case dimensions.

Bold, hulking and at times menacing, Panerai’s presence is not one to be messed with — both on the wrist and in the horological industry. Tracing its roots back as a supplier of tool watches for military forces, Panerai maintained its distinct DNA even after it was commercialised. As the years went by, Panerai adapted to shifts in consumer preferences, technological advancements and even environmental degradation.

Concerns about the environment necessitated greater sustainable efforts as the watch manufacture tweaked its research and development to concoct cutting-edge eco-friendly materials for its watches. The result is a partnership with UNESCO to protect the oceans in the coming decade and a new recycled- based material program named eSteel was announced this year amongst its earlier initiatives.

Mounting interest from ladies sees Panerai create its first-ever model expressly for women named the Panerai Piccolo Due, a fast-rising star in the Panerai universe. True to the brand’s spirit of tireless and thoughtful evolution, new creations maintain their essential character but embrace new aesthetic dimensions to expand their appeal, the latest of which is the Luminor Marina Quaranta.

Quaranta, which translates to forty in English, is the latest evolution in Panerai’s official records reviving a case dimension that has been in the archives. The new 40mm Luminor Marina Quaranta will replace the outgoing 42mm references as the smallest Luminor Marina in production. Versatility and wearability were the motivating factors behind the adjustments though fans of the collection will be heartened to hear that hallmarks of the classic Luminor Marina and Panerai’s DNA are retained.

The Gift of Forty: the Panerai Luminor Marina QuarantaThe 40mm watch diameter is long considered as the golden dimension for its incredible versatility for virtually all wrist sizes, ladies included. With the Luminor Marina Quaranta, Panerai strikes an equilibrium between elegance and casual attitude to appeal more to discerning audiences. The iconic aesthetics of the Luminor Marina such as the patented crown-protection device and cushion- shaped case are proportionately executed to fit the refreshed case dimensions. Though the stainless steel case does not provide the security of a true dive watch, its 100m water resistance is ample enough to withstand daily wear and activities.

Available in three distinct colour variations, the Luminor Marina Quaranta feature three fail-safe options — a matte white dial with straps in black alligator and deep brown calf (PAM01271), a matte black dial paired with black alligator and black calf straps (PAM01272) and a sun-brushed blue dial with a navy-blue alligator strap and second in tobacco calf (PAM01270). One of Panerai’s slimmest calibres in its arsenal, the automatic P.900 calibre, powers the collection, providing a weekend-proof three-day power reserve.
