Seiko SPB143J1 — The Homage Watch With Professional Specification Award
Progressing forward while keeping an eye on the past has been a winning formula for Seiko. A mix of modern and vintage elements harmonises effortlessly — giving a peek into what lies in the future for Seiko while still embracing its history. The Seiko Prospex SPB143J1 celebrates the 55th anniversary of the 62MAS, Seiko’s first diver’s watch which formed an important milestone in the Japanese watchmaker’s history books. The Prospex term was also coined during that period as a reference to its professional specifications that brought greater reliability and safety to both professional and recreational divers.

The SPB143J1 was created as an homage to the 62MAS, referencing its general case shape and aesthetics. The watch specifications of the SPB143J1 are in line with that of Prospex which include 200m water resistance, self-illumination and an automatic movement. With the foundational elements set, Seiko populated the SPB143J1 with modern touches. Shades of black and grey meld for a contemporary monochromatic interplay, while Seiko’s super hard coated stainless steel case and sapphire crystal further strengthens the SPB143J1 against scratches. Seiko’s Lumibrite-filled hands and indexes offer greater legibility, glowing green under lowlight conditions while appearing stark white for contrast under daylight. Within the case lies the Seiko 6R35 movement as part of its high performance 6R series calibre with a magnetic resistance up to 4,800 A/m for greater reliability. Other improvements made to the calibre extended the power reserve up to 70 hours from the 42-hour average.
