What makes a jewellery collection great in the big 20 of 21? Well, the “ew” in jewellery happens if you’re pretty closed minded when it comes to the baubles and bijoux. Anything goes really if you’re set on wearing anything: the icy or the serious or the stacks or the singular. Simply put, nothing is too outre or out there. However, Charlene Kuah of Objects of Mass Distraction (or OOMD for short) puts an intellectual spin (the beauty is in first sight and the joy is in actually wearing it) with her latest collection titled Punk Rocks Ring, a set of five made in collaboration with gemologist-in-training Abigail Chui, stone-setter Sam Soo and an annonymous silversmith.

Here, Kuah takes us through the makings of the Punk Rocks Ring collection.

“This is one of our initial sketches for the Punk Rock Rings collection while brainstorming ideas. We rejected it in the end.”

“I’m illustrating the idea for The Hope Pebble, which we initially designed as a halo ring but decided the stone lends itself better as a solitaire. We wanted to have a line of pink gradient spinels on the shank, arranged from light to dark to light.”

“A ring shank 3D-printed in resin from CAD design.  The settings for each stone had to be handmade though, as each had a very precise and specific profile, considering its uneven and asymmetrical form.”

“These are three millimeter rainbow stones for our Rainbow Solitaire ring. From top tobottom: Purple garnet, amethyst, kyanite, apatite, blue topaz, iolite, chrome tourmaline, chrome diopside, tourmaline, scapolite citrine, hessonite garnet and almandine garnet.

“The first four rings from the Punk Rocks Ring collection done (set and polished) and ready to be sent for plating.”

“There was no specific inspiration for the Punk Rocks Ring campaign images. I thought about modelling them on hands but wanted them to look less typical from the usual jewellery hand shots by experimenting with different hand gestures to create different moods. They are coupled with product shots, which were really about capturing the unique features and idiosyncrasies of each ring and treating each piece like an object d’art. Since this was a spoof on fine jewellery, the visuals had to look polished and refined.” Editor’s note: Yes, they’re shot on the hands of a lady but then again like we said, there’re no longer any boundaries to bijoux
