#MFMF88: Deputy Editor Bryan Goh's “Present Purpose” Playlist
Sometimes, it feels like we string together words to form the themes of our Men’s Folio Music Friday column. And most of the time, it is true. I mean, who wants to read about playlists with themes like “My Summer Playlist” or “This is What I Listen to After Nasty Breakups”? The true joy of reading about playlists is finding psychological crumbs that make you realise that hey, magazine people are just like you!

But before I digress, here, what I call my “Present Purpose” playlist. Or in simpler terms, just some tracks I’ve recently discovered that I’ve been looping day in and night out.

Sally Yeh — 200度

Gregory, the associate Fashion Editor from L’officiel is obsessed with this song and I kind of get why. One of the lyrics has Sally literally singing “You know you’ll explode when you hold me.” Raunchy, much? My ancestors who used to own an opium den in old school Lavender would be so proud.

Clara Luciani — La Grenade

I first heard this song when I stumbled upon a Chanel J12 watch commercial that had Camille Cottin jumping into the River Seine. My first thought was, holy crap! She’s going to need to amputate her limbs off! And my second was, god do I love it when singers meld ’80s electro and rock together. I don’t even mind that there’s a Madonna reference in it and everybody knows that I have an odd distaste for Madonna herself.

Lous and The Yakuza — Dilemme

Yes, I have a penchant for listening to songs where I have no idea what the singer is saying. And yes, I’m super late to this Summer sleeper hit. Okay, on a cursory note, one of the lyrics says that “Life is a bi**h that you have to keep on a leash”. Consider me sold.

Sofia — Clairo

Our Art Director Izwan is the mix of an indie, sad and e-boy and he actually turned me on to listening to this song. It’s the perfect track for padding around the house to do chores or lounging out in the sun to read. It all began…during Summer…in Northern Italy…in…1985…
