If you are one of Desmond Tan’s 223,000 followers on Instagram, you might have noticed this local lad is just a boy-next-door — he loves bubble tea, dogs and fast cars. But there is one thing he does better than the everyday man — his skin looks so good, it’s as if his genes conveniently forgot about the aging process.
Men’s Folio caught up with him at the Estee Lauder ‘The Night Is Yours” pop-up to find out how he looks so damn good and surprisingly, we have more in common with him than we think.

He actually ages.
“When we hit the age of 30 (the actor is 33 this year), we start to see more changes to our skin — the loss of firmness and you’ll also start to see some fine lines. I call acting a work hazard because we have to express ourselves during acting and that’s when I started to notice fine lines and dehydration because of the long hours.”

He’s smart about his skin.
“I used to do more outdoor activities, I used to swim a fair bit or run under the sun but nowadays I’ve changed to doing it in the evening or night. This is partly because I looked too tan next to female artistes who are usually fair. This poses a problem for the lighting man who’s working on your scene. In recent years, most of my scenes are actually outdoor scenes and that’s when you need a proper skincare routine to counter the damages done.”

His fitness routine isn’t complicated.
“I take a more holistic approach to wellness: I believe in eating healthy, proper exercise and I drink plenty of water; I used to drink five litres a day. And then of course, I do proper skincare.”

He doesn’t have time for fussy skincare.

I cheat through so I use it in the day to make sure that my skin doesn’t flare up in the sun. I consider it as a shield for my skin.”
