Loewe recharges its 2023 Summer edition of the Paula’s Ibiza capsule with striking narratives on nostalgia and memories.
Nothing last forever except the memories that are passed on. For us living in the digital age, memory is perhaps everything that ends up on the internet. Images act as fact, the same way Wikipedia entries provide certain affirmations that things did or may have occurred. You get to live other people’s memories as well — taking bits of them to form your own opinion of things, which has supplemented our limited perception of the world through snapshots and written posts of billions.
Jonathan Anderson is quite familiar with this particular phenomenon, which the creative director at Loewe uses to design collections based on experiences he has never actually had. Despite frequent travels to Ibiza, Spain, while growing up, Anderson had only known the lore of Paula’s Ibiza boutique after its glory had superseded into Spanish memory. It would make sense then that for each of the many Summer capsules based on the store, Anderson builds it around a narrative of “memories”, deconstructing what would have been an experience with are creation of its glory days.
Paula’s Ibiza — a capsule of Summer ready-to-wear, accessories and objects — is arresting because it develops and completes fashion as mere feelings of expression. The boutique — which became prominent in the 1970s — acted as a meeting point for all creatives and musicians who made Ibiza their home, and Anderson leaves no restraint in contextualising Loewe’s iconic pieces with this fitting summer narrative.
Weaving, braiding, textures, woven raffia and Iraca palm are the protagonists of accessories for the 2023 edition of the capsule. New styles include a multi-colour front tote and petal basket— both available in various sizes. Even though the sunglasses are bold and playful, oversized shapes with padded contrast profiles transform the Wave Mask and Flame.
