Tay Tawan on Being Tay Tawan

Tay Tawan on Being The Tay Tawan
For Thai actor and host “Tay” Tawan Vihokratana, charming an audience takes more than just pretty looks as fans have gone head over heels over his absent-mind yet authentic demeanour.

During “Tay” Tawan Vihokratana’s brief stint in Room Alone in 2014, the Bangkok-born actor gained widespread attention that would make him a mainstay in Thailand’s public eye — but not for the reasons you might expect. His well-proportioned looks? Perhaps. Charming demeanour? Close. To better understand Tay Tawan’s true appeal would require some answers from the audience that have paved the way for his acting career and his better-known hosting pursuits. “Goofy”, “quirky”, and “in his world” are just some words that are heavily associated with the 31-year-old and together with the numerous co-stars and GMMTV colleagues who have helped pushed Thai Wind (the term affectionately associated with the phenomenon of Thai celebrity-culture expansion), Tay Tawan have started to open up and show even more character over the past few years. While star factor is often talked about since Thai Wind imploded on the scene, it is hard not to see why being his wayward self has made millions go head over heels in pursuit of a talent who feels more like a long-distance friend rather than a celebrity.

Why did you decide to venture into hosting and acting when you were younger?
I was just looking for a side hustle to earn an additional income while studying. It was an opportunity to step out of my comfort zone and try my hand at things I may not have been good at before.

You studied economics before you began your hosting/acting career, and seeing that you are involved in several business ventures as well, would you say your time in school has helped? How have these businesses been going for ou?
I gained valuable insights into the world of business and marketing, and it allowed me to better understand the behaviours of buyers and sellers. Currently, I am collaborating with friends on a clothing business, so it’s great that I’m utilising the knowledge and skills I have acquired through my studies.

Would you consider yourself a control freak?
It’s true that I tend to be a bit of a control freak, as I strive for perfection in the things that matter most to me. Admittedly, I can become frustrated when things don’t go as planned. Yet, I am often hesitant to confront others about it. As I continue to mature and grow older, I recognise the importance of acknowledging my limitations and accepting that certain aspects of life are beyond my control.

Describe a typical day in your life.
In the famous words of Rihanna, “Work, work, work, work, work”.[Laughs] I find myself constantly engaged in various work-related tasks every day. However, during periods of downtime, I prioritise a healthy morning routine — including a nourishing breakfast and perusing the internet. Occasionally, I enjoy spending time with friends or through solo gym sessions and even travels to break up the monotony. Although my schedule may seem straightforward, I find beauty in the simplicity of my day-to-day life.

You’re well-known for being extremely goofy. On TikTok alone, I found multiple compilations of moments where you’re caught being silly and clumsy — spilling sauces, knocking things over, and going to the airport with an expired passport. Would you consider that to be one of your strongest personality traits?
I often wonder if my tendency to be lost in thought is a sign of possessing a weak or strong character. I often live in my head more than in reality, leading me to overlook simple things like the beauty of a scenic drive or a chance encounter with a stranger. My mom knows this about me all too well, so I may sometimes come across as clumsy or absent-minded. I need more time and patience when learning new tasks because I’m not good at learning quickly. Perhaps my fans may think my forgetfulness is part of what makes me special.

Your fans seem to enjoy that silly side of you as well. In an industry where most celebrities would conceal their personalities, I think you are one of the uncommon ones who have embraced your true self on screen — perhaps being a host may have contributed to this. How long did it take for you to get comfortable in front of the camera? Was it difficult to bring that side of you on screen, and was it ever this way at the beginning of your career?
Over the last three years, I have realised that being true to myself is the key to genuine happiness. Previously, I believed that I needed to conform to certain expectations to be accepted or liked by others, which left me feeling unfulfilled and unhappy. But now I know I don’t have to pretend to be anyone else to be accepted and appreciated by those around me. I can show up for any shoots and other commitments as my true self, which has resulted in a deeper sense of contentment and joy. Even though there are moments when I feel the pressure to conform to certain norms, I remain committed to staying true to myself and living my life authentically.

Can you share your most memorable moment with the GMMTV family?
The sense of community at GMMTV is truly heartwarming, and I am so grateful to be a part of it! The way we come together to lift each other — whether through spreading the word about a new project or promoting each other’s work on social media — is a testament to the supportive environment we’ve created. It’s a beautiful thing to see, and it brings me so much joy to be a part of a team that values collaboration and mutual encouragement. Here at GMMTV, we truly are like a family, and I feel fortunate to be a part of this incredible community.

What is something that people get wrong about you?
I’ve often been mistaken for a naturally cheerful and outgoing person, but the truth is, I tend to keep to myself and have only a small circle of close friends. In the past, I have found myself moulding my personality to fit in with others and striving to make those around me happy, even at the expense of my comfort. I always hide my vulnerabilities to maintain a sociable behaviour, but in reality, I feel most at ease when I can retreat into my haven. Despite this, when I decide to step out of my comfort zone and engage with the world around me, I consciously try to put my best foot forward and approach each opportunity with enthusiasm and optimism.

What role have you always wanted to try as an actor?
I aspire to play the role of a villain on screen. It offers the chance to showcase human nature’s flawed and darker sides. Often, protagonists are portrayed in a positive light, but portraying the antagonist offers an opportunity to delve into the complexities of human behaviour and adds a sense of excitement and realism to the storyline.

Between acting and hosting, which would you choose if you could only choose one?
Hosting is my preferred choice over acting, as it allows me to be my authentic self. I enjoy the uncertainty of it all, as each day brings a new and exciting challenge. As a host, I would have the privilege of connecting with a diverse range of guests and hearing their stories, which always brings a sense of fulfilment. There’s something magical about exchanging ideas and perspectives, and I would feel grateful to be a part of it.

You have been in the industry for almost 10 years now, and within that time, the Thai media industry has also exponentially grown to be a global powerhouse. What are your thoughts on this?
I feel fortunate to be part of the entertainment industry today as there is a greater sense of acceptance and openness towards diversity. The internet has played a significant role in providing access to various cultures and people from around the world, making it easier to connect with others. This has allowed me to expand my fan base globally and learn more about international fans and their unique perspectives. Through this, I have gained a greater appreciation for diversity too.

Is there anything you would have done differently in your career?
Honestly, I would like to focus first on what I’m doing right now, as I’m always striving to improve in my current endeavours. However, I’m open to exploring new opportunities. One avenue that intrigues me is acting on a live stage, and while I may wait until I feel fully prepared, I am excited at the prospect of taking on this challenge in the future.

Has a moment in your career changed your perspective on how you see the world?
I would say gaining a more realistic perspective on the world has allowed me to embrace and appreciate differences among people. I comprehend and acknowledge these distinctions, as it enables me to approach others with authenticity and empathy. For example, hosting requires me to be an open and receptive vessel so that I can fully comprehend and understand my guests. By accepting my strengths and weaknesses, I have become more compassionate and accepting of others. Differences are beautiful and integral in fostering a more inclusive and kind world.

What can we expect next from you?

Two exciting events are coming up this year that I can’t wait for! First, the BELUCA concert on May 20th, where I’ll have the pleasure of working alongside my dearest friends. And second, the Manga series Cherry Magic! Keep an eye out and join me in anticipation of these amazing opportunities!

Lastly, any messages for your fans in Singapore?
I want to say thank you to the fans in Singapore for always supporting me. Your support has made me feel at home in Singapore, and I am truly grateful for that. I can’t wait to see you all soon. Take care, and know that I love you all. Thank you so much!
