#ObjectsOfDesire: the Versatile Tissot PRX 35mm

  • By Charmaine Tan

Every week, we uncover a new object of desire from the vast and magical world of brands. This week, the world of horology presents the Tissot PRX with a unisex 35mm case that is satin-brushed in steel and tells time with a very affordable price tag.

Watches track history and are pieces of history themselves. They tell the passing of time as much as their parts tell stories of how the world moved when the watch was assembled, what was in vogue and what was not.

Launched in 1978, the Tissot PRX embodied the need to express, to be brave and rebellious — a sentiment that rings true today, but even more so now since the angular vintage look comes in new unisex sizing and a very attractive price point. So if you are looking to get yourself iced without breaking the bank, do read on.

While the relaunch of the quartz and mechanically-powered PRX last year in the 40mm case was a big hit, some had concerns about its non-articulating lugs, making the otherwise comfortable bracelet unwearable. The quartz-powered PRX 35mm solves this issue, and introduces an attractive array of new colours and the whimsy of versatile sizing.

Not that the PRX 40mm cannot be worn in the same way, but the PRX 35mm allows the C-shape links of the bracelet to conform to the shape of the wrist a lot better. The metal of these sports watches often mean that the dimensions foretell an even chunkier fit on the wrist, so Tissot’s move to make this sub-collection definitely aligns well with its design intention, and the new, young and experimental audience.

The 35mm PRX lineup features satin finished stainless steel cases, with dials in the time-tested colours of silver, dark blue, green, and a chilly ice blue. There is also another fully yellow gold outfit, which includes the bracelet, case, and dial — a clear shoutout to the resplendent 80s.

Despite the low entry price point, the PRX 35 mm comes with a robust screw-in solid steel caseback, a screw-down crown, 100 meters of water resistance and a premium sapphire crystal. It is premium without the premium, so here’s one object of desire you can probably actually get your hands on.
