Our Heroes theme, which has served us well for the past few years, takes an evolutionary approach and I’m proud, together with the rest of the team, to share the newest theme for the August’22 issue: “Hometown Glory”.
There is a slight hint of regret to move past the Heroes theme, but given what everyone has gone through during the pandemic, that title is befitting of those who have sacrificed selflessly. Men’s Folio August’22 cover stars Dharni, Tabitha Nauser, Glenn Yong and Shye — supported by Onitsuka Tiger — share their connections with Singapore, and how that has shaped their identity and career.

Dharni — I feel more whole on both sides because I understand both sides, my perception of things is also broadened. I innovate, create, and I like to do crazy things that no one has done before just using my creativity.

Tabitha Nauser — Homeliness is anywhere that feels safe and feels comforting. I want to say home isn’t a particular place. But then whenever I come back to Singapore, I go, “Yeah, this is home”. I travel quite a bit and I refer to Singapore as home whenever I talk about it. I also believe that home is what you make of it; it doesn’t matter where you are.

Glenn Yong — I used to be an extrovert but I’m more introverted today. Maybe it’s because of life experiences, or the people you’re surrounded with. In a way, that made me change the way I relate to people in a certain way. If you’re talking about my personality, and how I treat people, it’s the same on- and off-screen but maybe I will be more guarded — especially when it comes to people-to-people relationships.

Shye — I think it’s good to aspire to put Singapore’s creatives on a global map and we should work towards that. To me, Hometown Glory also means having the support of Singaporeans. Hopefully, it makes them feel proud to be a part of my journey.
