Nature has always been one of the North Stars of Grand Seiko. From the rhythms of life to the changing of the seasons to age-old traditions, the Japanese watchmaker’s philosophy of “Nature with Time” celebrates Japanese spirituality of time, brought to life with the pride and spirit of Takumi.

​After unveiling its landmark U.F.A. Calibre last year, Grand Seiko continues the story of astonishing accuracy this year with the Grand Seiko Evolution 9 Collection Spring Drive U.F.A. “Ice Forest at Dawn” SLGB006. Having worked with platinum, High-Intensity Titanium, and Ever-Brilliant Steel in three earlier U.F.A. iterations, the Japanese watchmaker turns its eyes to yellow gold for this year’s release. The 37mm yellow-gold case and black dial are bound to be timeless, but a closer inspection of the dial reveals intricacies that Grand Seiko has excelled at over the years. As with its three other counterparts, the SLGB006’s dial draws inspiration from ice forests found in the winter months in Shinshu’s mountains. The SLGB006’s “Ice Forest at Dawn” moniker crystallises the picturesque scene of the Shinshu forest during winter’s dawn. Subtle gold specks are reminiscent of ice particles suspended in sub-zero conditions that radiate a golden glow under the sun’s vertical light streaks. While each rendition is unique, this distinct technique is a reprise of the one used in the Masterpiece SBGD202 edition.

The ethereal beauty continues on the watch’s reverse side as the Spring Drive U.F.A. Calibre 9RB2 is decorated with a fine texture that recalls the winter frost on the trees of Shinshu. Beyond its intricacies lies a deep technical understanding of electromechanics that enabled Grand Seiko to achieve unparalleled accuracy of ±20 seconds annually. It is further backed by a 72-hour power reserve to ensure the 80-piece limited edition maintains autonomy and chronometric precision; a power reserve indicator on the movement indicates the level.

​Grand Seiko’s reverence for nature moves from the forests to rock formations in the Grand Seiko Elegance Collection “Iwao Blue” SBGY043. Iwao, which translates to “rock or stone”, holds a deeper meaning in ancient Japanese contexts, symbolising strength, immovability, and resilience. Its stoic symbolism is elevated with the deep beauty of katsuiro, the deepest shade of indigo popularised by samurai and their armour. As with indigo, it emanates an endless spectrum of shades, ranging from indigo to blue to navy, under various lighting conditions.

Housed in a 38.5mm steel case with a seven-link bracelet, the “Thin Dress” case further accentuates the watch’s romance and beauty. Unlike Grand Seiko’s other illustrious case designs, the “Thin Dress” was introduced in 2019 to mark the Spring Drive’s 20th anniversary. Despite its rookie status, its slender, curved case has endeared itself to Grand Seiko fans as the Grand Seiko dress watch. Grand Seiko opted for the manually wound Spring Drive Calibre 9R31 (±15 seconds per month) to maintain its svelte profile. Omitting the date aperture and placing the power reserve indicator on the movement side ensures the beauty of the watch dial is uninterrupted.
