Colour Us Impressed: Five Watches That Will Brighten Up Any Collection

Forget white or black dials, these colourful watches will let your personality really shine.

In an age where a wristwatch is no longer a tool of necessity but rather an extension of one’s personality, it makes perfect sense to ditch the boring old white dials and replace them with something that has a little more character. These five fantastic watches with colourful dials break the stereotypes of a traditional wristwatch and offer a more contemporary approach to traditional watchmaking.

Roger Dubuis Excalibur Liu Wei Monotourbillon (MT)
If you’ve ever wondered what would happen if an artist was given unbridled access to a watch manufacture and then tasked to create a watch, this is the result. In creating this fantastic rendition of Roger Dubuis’ Excalibur Monotourbillon watch, they worked with the sculptor, drawer, and painter, Liu Wei, to reimagine the design of the watch. The result is a cacophony of striking colours and architectural lines, transforming the dial literally into an artist’s canvas. To bring Liu Wei’s vision of the watch to life, the transparent sapphire glass dial was engraved with vertical lines on the front and back, these were then meticulously filled, some with regular lacquer and others with UV paint resulting in sophisticated architectural depth under UV light.

Zenith DEFY 21 Ultra Colour
Any fans of colourful watches should definitely have this box set on their radar as it offers not one but a collection of eight chromatically charged watches. In this collection are the eight DEFY 21 watches that offer a choice of black, blue, violet, orange, pink, green, turquoise and khaki-coloured dials. Additionally, these vibrant colours also transcend beyond the dials into quite an unexpected part of the watch – the movement. This interesting feature of the watch is compounded by the fact that the watches all feature Zenith’s ground-breaking El Primero 1/100th of a second chronograph movement which is incredible enough even without the use of colours. This eight-watch box set is limited to only eight boxes worldwide.

Hublot Big Bang Integrated King Gold Rainbow
Remember the game, spot the difference? This year Hublot announced a new version of this game, only this time, it is played with two of their Big Bang watches in King Gold, paved with gemstones set in the colour of the rainbow. Hublot meticulously picked radiant gemstones like ruby, amethyst, blue topaz, and tsavorite, as well as a whole spectrum of sapphires – pink, orange, blue and yellow and paired them one by one to create these amazing pieces. There are more than 170 gemstones on the case and dial while the bracelet offers close to 750 gemstones. Oh, and as for the game, apparently there are 7 differences in total, but forget that, just get both and call it a day.

Richard Mille RM 88 Automatic Tourbillon Smiley
Looking at this watch, you can tell it is quite confusing to those familiar with Richard Mille. The signature shape is there but on its dial, you’ll find not the normal dynamic, sporty and technical elements we have come to associate Richard Mille with but rather a plethora of little trinkets. We have to say however, it still manages to put a smile on our faces. Once in a while, Richard Mille will do this: offer up a totally unexpected watch that is designed to be a little more fun as they last did with their BonBon collection in 2019. However, if you think that each element of the watch, however playful, is not finished with Richard Mille’s technical prowess, you’d be mistaken. For example, the cocktail glass consists of a four-part assembly in 3N and 5N yellow gold, the olive which is only 1.4mm in height has been polished, some glass components have been micro-blasted and weigh only 0.4g, and the list goes on.

Franck Muller Vanguard Revolution 3 Skeleton Cortina Watch 50th Anniversary Special Editions
Much has already been said about the Revolution 3 and its tri-axial tourbillon since it launched in 2004 so we won’t really go into that. For this version that Franck Muller produced to celebrate Cortina Watch’s 50th anniversary however, we see them giving the watch an incredibly colourful demeanour through the use of a kaleidoscope of baguette-cut diamonds, rubies, and emeralds, paired with either rainbow-coloured or sleek black dials. Each of the five variants you see is a piece unique meaning that they are one of one. A unique piece to celebrate a once-in-a-lifetime achievement.
