Just mere days after the showing of the Dior Men’s Fall 2023 show, there have been several discussions on the internet about what it takes to bring a brand from homeground to distant lands. On one side of the camp, discussions have been made that a show is only stellar if a designer takes inspiration from a location and imbues it into their work; even better, if they engage the locals of the land to form the show itself. On the other, we, and fashion fanatics from Twitter to far-flung forums have agreed that good clothing only works from runway to real life if it looks “in-place” when it is showed in a foreign land.

While the Dior Men’s Fall 2023 show has all the motifs of Kim Jones’s current era at Dior Men — the flou versus the tailoring, streetwear codes from Paris’s right bank, and the stylistic cues of men who dress like boys and vice versa — Cairo, where the show was held formed a backdrop for what Jones’s himself has been doing for the past few seasons: crafting collections that can form a man’s intercontinental wardrobe.

Part Dune inspired and part destination dressing, the Dior Men’s Fall 2023 show was a solid set of travelling staples.

Here, some of the key looks from the show.

The Dior Men's Fall 2023 Collection Goes from Dune to a Dream
Look 1: From Dune (reportedly, one of Jones’s inspirations for the collection) to a dream manifested in real: the first look from the Dior Men’s Fall 2023 collection.

Look 3: With such a rich history at his literal fingertips, Jones’s mined a motif from Christian Dior’s 1949 Haute Couture collection titled “Milieu du Siecle”. In English, Mid Century.

Look 14: Next season’s macro trend = the menswear kilt worn over trousers. As for a macro trend = shoe guards.

Look 28: The shorts trend shows no sign of stopping and when worn with leggings, gives off a rather insoucient early noughties vibe.

Look 32: A motif employed since his very first collection, Jones’s widens the sash and now drapes it over the shoulders as a cape; a styling technique that can be done with a blanket of one’s choice.

Look 36: A micro-trend for the next season = hardcore wrap around shades.

Look 37: A motif loved by Monsieur Dior himself and a tribute to Cairo, the constellation graphic shines at the Dior Men’s Fall 2023 show.

Look 40: The beauty of a Kim Jones’s show is always spotting the subtle ways he styles things. Here, a double belt provides visual intrigue.

Look 47: The plastic harness from the Dior Men’s Fall 2023 collection is a nod to Dune and another, to celebrities looking for something interesting to wear at the next awards show.

Look 63: So simple albeit so desirable (another Jones’s trope at Dior Men), this is what we call a Frankenstein knit.

Look 70: For the millenials, the Tumblr-famous galaxy print is back. For the Gen-Zers, this is the print you’re going to be copping soon.

Look 75: For the millenials who are familiar with the galaxy print, it now comes in a car-coat silhouette.
