At the recent launch for Converse’s Fall/Holiday 2013 collection, the message was blaring: SNEAKERS GET LOUD. Anarchy was the name of the game, with zippers, studs and a whole lot of attitude infused on their latest sneakers, Converse is sure to have you feeling punk this coming season; perhaps a subtle nod to the recent Costume Institute Gala where the theme of “Punk: Chaos to Couture” was selected?
Held at the always-cozy Sculpture Square, the event itself was as manic as any punk concert could get. With music glaring and graffiti confronting you the minute you stepped in, you were made aware that this wasn’t your traditional swank event. Instead of your usual display where the items are presented in a very nonchalant manner, the staging was accompanied by a live graffiti drawing, a DIY segment where we can add studs to the surfaces of any items, and perhaps most creatively, a barber station where patrons were able to get an undercut shave to their liking (this particular writer got pressured into doing it too.)
Now on to the shoes. Who’s never owned a pair of Chuck Taylors before? Every season they seem to come up with new and fresh interpretation for the all-American favorite sneakers but this time around, this writer found a particular delight on a pair of Chucks that feature zips on both sides of the laces (We can see Kirsten Stewart rocking a pair at a red carpet near you). Sure, adding zips might not particularly be a revolutionary new concept on a footwear, but putting it on a classic pair of Converse sneakers seem to add the needed edge to freshen up the brand entirely. Our eyes were also immediately gravitated towards a sky blue pair of high-tops that seemed so precious we were tempted to immediately run off amidst the rumble of the live-band performance. Just saying.
