Loro Piana Sports The Touch of Spirit

Loro Piana exemplifies the pinnacle of elegance meets performance in everything from its Ryder’s Cup ties to its Fall Winter 2025 collection.

When widely-acclaimed graphic designer Saul Bass said design is thinking made visual, he was not taking into account the tactility that makes design in fashion more nuanced, experiential and sensorial. Designing the touch and feel of what is meant to be worn, and beyond that, perform, is almost, if not more, important than what is seen on a body. Houses that understand this are adamant in making sure no corners are cut in both expressions of their identity.

Although Loro Piana has often been closely associated with the slower side of life, its commitment to supporting excellence in sport is not to be overlooked. Horse riding, to Sergio Loro Piana, is a school of life that teaches not just respect for the animal, but also perseverance and discipline — words that reflect the house’s approach to the act of and production of such creations and designs.

Loro Piana also continues its relationship with Team Europe for the 2025 Ryder Cup, supplying attire that athletes and their entourages will wear on and off the course at golf’s most prestigious team contest. The house’s ties with the Ryder Cup date back to 2016, when it designed the first official uniforms for Team Europe.

Since then, this prestigious event has essentially served as an “open-air laboratory” for testing state-of-the-art fabrics in various climatic conditions. This year, the new sets are made with contributions from team captain Luke Donald. From using an innovative stretch fabric that has been exclusively treated to ensure excellent breathability, quick drying and comfort in polos, to treating fibres with silver to elevate anti-odour properties, an inclusive partnership like this is what allows the best of sophisticated elegance and functionality to meet as equals on the field.

It is therefore no surprise that the Fall Winter 2025 collection celebrates Sergio Loro Piana’s fascination with equestrian sports, drawing not just from its competitive spirit but also its appreciation for the journey. Softness in texture and construction defines Loro Piana’s approach to menswear, and that comes to the fore when accounting for the movement and ease required when riding. Functional details come alive in the transformation of the iconic Spagna jacket into a short cape, while the historical Maremma Jacket returns with a blazer and pants that are meant to front actual races. More outdoorsy silhouettes are also incorporated via quilted hunting jackets and parkas meant for moments en plein air, only to be balanced with the more formal inclusions of double-breasted suits, or leisurely Vienna and Ballater jackets.

Grounded by accessories like lace-ups, boots and bags such as the oversized Bale and the new Needle bag, the collection is designed with an ease of movement in mind. Everything is then coloured in a natural, earthen palette, expressed in sumptuous textures that include cheviot, cashmere, cash melton and merino wool — a palatial guarantee of craftsmanship that is studied, curated, and made with the highest respect for each material.
