The appeal of COS spans far and wide, from dressing high-powered art dealers, underpaid fashion journalists, to your friend group’s best-dressed boyfriend. Adored for its ability to evoke a contemporary designer feel within a relatively accessible price point, it has been solidified as the brand du jour for looking put together, no matter the occasion — across weddings, work and snazzy events. Given its reputation that caters to a wide range of audiences, how does COS position itself with a specific enough point of view to conjure aspiration amongst its peers on the New York Fashion Week calendar?
Perhaps the goal was never about puffing its chest to merely align itself with the upper echelons of the fashion circle, but rather to showcase to its audience the potential and diverse contexts in which their all-encompassing designs could exist — from the boardroom to the runways of New York. Evident in their Buy Now, See Now approach, adopted for Autumn Winter 25, the strategy was never to manufacture desire through delayed gratification but to serve the present, where things mattered the most.
Broad strokes with refined details best encapsulate the mood of Autumn Winter 25, where silhouettes and covert details interplay to create a sense of dynamism. Shapes are strong, yet constructed with intention, all to play an active role in creating dimension and movement with the wearer. In wool, collarless blazers juxtapose curved coats with oversized lapels that signal the dichotomous nature of materials, while a cardigan-bodysuit hybrid crafted in cashmere challenges the notion of sensuality through a façade of modesty. Brown tartan, which was once reminiscent of the grunge-inspired pieces à la Marc Jacobs for Perry Ellis, has now been reimagined through sarong-style wrap skirts, loose tunics and matching clutch bags. The point of view COS presents is not one of just-because-we-can newness or feigning intellectualism through layered, out-there concepts that require a lengthy press release to dissect: it is of the now.
In its frankness, minimalism has always been the gateway to elevation, as restraint demonstrates clarity in thought process, allowing details to shine through. Of every Pinterest board featuring 90s minimalism, leather blazers and Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, a wardrobe of cool charcoals and burnt umber was not meant to ride on novelty, but to rather expound on what COS does best—elevated essentials that feel luxurious, but not towards the extent of only saving them for special occasions.
