What makes some of these local or global creatives tick? In this weekly column, Kong Xianlong — first violinist for the Singapore Symphony Orchestra— shares his favourite things.
1. Cars: I get super excited when I talk about cars. Once I step into a car, all the negative feelings in my head disappear and I just simply enjoy driving. Lexus LFA, the 4.8L naturally aspirated V10 engine that was co-developed by Yamaha, is still the best-sounding car to me.
We all know Yamaha is famous for making musical instruments, motorcycles, audio products, and even sports equipment. This car to me is like a perfect combination of speed and music.

2. Perfumes: Chanel, Dior, Gucci, Prada…there’s nothing special about their fragrances. I prefer to collect brands like Creed, Diptyque, Le Labo, Maison Margiela, Byredo and Penhaligons. Woody scents are a must when I choose a perfume.
Creed Aventus is one of my favourites – it is a blend of woody and citrus scent which turns out to be very alluring with a smokey accord.

3. Sneakers: I love collecting Air Jordans as Michael Jordan is like a legend to me. There is a story behind every AJ generation and colourways. Those stories inspire me to face all the challenges in my music career which is what MJ did.
I have already over 20 AJs in my collection so far.

4. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: I did not use to like Mozart when I was young and found it quite boring to play. But ever since I started learning the Mozart Violin Concerto No. 5, I was then amazed by every little detail found in his music.
To me, Mozart’s music is very childlike and pure but sometimes powerful and serious.

5. Clothing: I love to buy clothes from brands like 5cm, Off-White, Izzue, ADLV, and many others as they have very unique designs and styles. I will also research their founder and how they have become such famous brands. Wearing various styles allows me to show off a different me on different occasions.
6. Dogs: I love having pets, especially dogs. The innocent looks on their faces make me go “aww so cute” all the time and all I want to do is to make them happy. I had a brown toy poodle since I was still in secondary school. He’s now 12 years old already.
I am thankful for his company over the past 12 years and I will always cherish him.
7. Lego: I started building Legos last year and I cannot believe that I did not start earlier. It’s so much better than video games if you want to pass time quickly while having fun. I was amazed that so many little pieces of Legos can be turned into a masterpiece.
But just sometimes, it will hurt your fingers if you spend too much time on it!
