Soma Haus Is the Nirvana Of Wellness Spaces

  • By Bryan Goh

Float, freeze, sweat, or get anything from a myofascial massage to a nervous system & heart rate variability consultation at wellness space Soma Haus.

In the six-set Venn diagram of wellness — health, fitness, nutrition, appearance, sleep, and mindfulness — lies Nirvana; where issues like chronic fatigue, digestive concerns, or depression cease to exist. The pilgrimage, however, is fraught with peril. Two of the most pertinentones include an accumulation of health problems due to a lack of consciousness or ingesting completely misinformed information.

“We often see that the focus on health was always symptom or pain-based, where one only seeks help when a problem surfaces. At Soma Haus, we look at health beyond the physical body and symptoms, and focus on creating experiences that are not just grounded in science but deeply informed by a growing body of research and literature,” says co-founder and therapist Kathy Gabriel.

This way of wellness — listen, learn, legitimise — crafted by Gabriel makes Soma Haus a 360-degree temple for its weary travellers. Or, as Gabriel calls it herself,“a sweet spot between a spa and clinic, also called a “Splenic”. Each treatment gives a positive feedback loop, from Shiatsu or myofascial massages to ice baths, infrared saunas, and sensory depriving float pods. Clients eventually realise that their emotions are not separate from their physical symptoms.

“We often forget how stress, trauma, and emotions express themselves as physical symptoms. Let’s say someone is experiencing anxiety where they can experience chest tightness, painful abdomen contractions, and prolonged anxiety. These can also affect their digestion, posture (spinal issues), and immune system.” If you are what you eat, then what you think, you become.

“We aren’t doing “holistic” strategies like Reiki or regressional healing. Our therapies are grounded in science, where the primary goal when giving support, education, and empowerment is to help others realise the power and resilience of our bodies. Breathwork is constantly being used and also as an evaluation or assessment tool in some consultations. We have the technology to help clients learn more about their breath and heart rate variability and map out a wellness strategy suited to their lifestyle or health goals. Having the two inform one another is a powerful strategy because not only is it fascinating, but the cross- fertilisation of philosophies and methods from ancient practices and modern technology can further bolster or improve the efficacy of one strategy.”

“If we consistently create the optimal environment or support the body needs to thrive, we can then better listen to understand it and take care of ourselves better,” says Gabriel. In short, what Soma Haus is doing for its people — reigning them in from a state of regression, assisting them to look from the outside in and vice versa, and if need be, serving a wonderful cup of calming tea.
