#MFMF113: DJ Psyk's Gem-Filled Heavy Rotation

Instead of featuring just the Men’s Folio team’s weekly playlists (you can catch up here), however, we’ve opened up the column to friends, industry mates, and people who we think have the right groove.

You know it’s going to be good when we invite a DJ to share his personal finds. Especially a DJ who dances. Here, DJ Psyk’s most recent selection of daily jams.

Kraftwerk – Musique Non Stop
I always find it hard to comprehend how this track hails from 1986. Yes, there are remixes and remastered versions of this track, but it’s the original version that gets me. The way the samples are sliced and sequenced are almost hypnotic and have definitely influenced the way I approach samples when producing my own tracks.

HOYO-MiX – Die Mittsommernacht-Fantasie
This is what I believe to be one of the best scores that HOYO-MiX has produced, and it’s such a shame that this in-game battle soundtrack was only featured during a limited-time event. The composition, instrumentation, arrangement and thematic cues evoke emotions of anger, hatred and confusion – which really brings immersion to the next level. Even if you don’t play Genshin Impact, give this track a shot — don’t knock it till you try it.

CHANGMO – It Ain’t Personal
This track is produced by my favorite producer, BRLLNT who comes from South Korea. Admittedly I don’t particularly listen to Korean music – however, I listen to a healthy dose of what BRLLNT has produced because it just gets my groove on and this track hits the sweet spot for me. I particularly enjoy how he processed and layered CHANGMO’s vocal stabs and ad-libs, and how it sits perfectly in the mix amidst the hip-house synth and Rhodes stabs.

Polyphia – Playing God
The best way I can describe this is “When God-tier musicians are also God-tier producers”. I don’t know how Tim Henson is able to draw out these sounds and harmonics from a nylon stringed guitar, but oh my goodness this track is pure eargasm.

Haywyre – Square One (Glacier Remix)
The original version of Square One is, in my opinion, a masterpiece created by the legendary Haywyre and is already such a good tune but the Glacier Remix manages to elevate a masterpiece and skyrockets it to another dimension. The production quality on this remix gave me goosebumps — this is one of those songs that I can’t help but to close my eyes and zone in to.

DJ Mitsu The Beats – Promise In Love (feat. José James)
A rather fitting track to wrap-up my selection. This is the track I bump when I’m winding down after a long day and never fails to calm my nerves.
