It’s Finally Time To Stop Using Full Coverage Foundations

This is the Big Idea right now that’s been gaining traction on both reel and real life: most full coverage foundations feel and look terrible no matter what a brand says based on studies shown or “unbiased” opinions from the mouths of its influencers that receive it. The logic is simple. If it fully covers an imperfection, then you’re going to feel it and in the worst-case scenario, show it when you leave a print on a surface.

But that’s not the only cause of the shift because once again, it’s a lifestyle change we’ve adopted thanks to the pandemic. We’ve gotten used to wearing nothing under a mask for so long that it feels almost impossible to do so now and we’ve gotten even better with our skincare routines—we’re not having it if a foundation doesn’t come with skincare ingredients that offer benefits in one swipe.

The answer to this predicament —coverage without the heaviness, skincare benefits without the stickiness, and the confidence of being able to hug someone wearing a white shirt— could come with M.A.C’s new Studio Radiance Serum-Powered Foundation. Sure, it might win an award for the lengthiest product name but so will its benefits.

It blurs everything from pores to fine lines, wears for up to 12 hours in our climate without the need for powder, and more importantly, is made up of an 80% skincare base that’s powered with 33 skincare ingredients. Still not convinced? Here, M.A.C Apac’s Senior Artistry Manager Anton Zimin will convince you so.

Hi Anton, how are you today?
Hi, thanks for asking! I’m living my best life! I’ve currently finished amazing events for our newly launched Studio Radiance Serum-Powered Foundation in Singapore & Indonesia. My next stop will be Paris for fashion week where I’ll be working backstage on makeup along with MAC artists around the globe. Super excited!

How do men achieve full foundation coverage in a natural way? Is achieving this a myth?
The secret is to prep your skin with a conditioning primer which immediately hydrates and moisturises your skin before using a primer that has texture improvement and oil control properties to create a perfect, even-looking finish.

Next, use a powder like the Studio Fix Pro Set + Blur Weightless Loose Powder for the T-zone only. This is the secret to making your skin look even more natural.

What kind of skin types would best suit the new Studio Radiance Serum-Powered Foundation and why?
The Studio Radiance Serum Foundation suits all skin types because its base is 80% skincare. Just use a little powder if you want a soft, matte look.

Do you have any tips to keep skin flawless in hot, humid weather?
I would recommend using a skin tone evening primer which should also have SPF to make sure your foundation is long-wearing. Everyone should have a Studio Fix Powder Set and Blur in their bag—it’ll be your best friend for matte touch-ups during the day.

What do you think of the different ways to apply foundation — fingers, sponge, or brush? Do you have a favourite method?
My favourite is to use a rounded synthetic brush, specifically the #170—it’s the fastest, easiest way to apply and blend any foundation. If your skin needs just a touch-up, I would recommend using your fingertips, or a sponge on problematic skin to build an even canvas.

What’s an Asian male beauty trend that you’re excited about? Are you able to suggest some steps using M.A.C to achieve that look?
My favourite trend is #BACKLIGHTING, when you create a beautiful, flawless inner glow for the skin and finish with a drop of foundation!

1. Apply the Hyper Real Serumizer™ Skin Balancing Hydration Serum with your fingertips and massage into the skin.

2. Use the #170 brush and two to three pumps of the new Studio Radiance Serum-Powered Foundation and blend well for an even skin tone.

3. Add Studio Fix Pro Set + Blur Weightless Loose Powder on the T-zone — and that’s it!

What do you think are going to be major trends next year?
Skincare-led trends will be with us for a long time, so focusing on good-for-your-skin ingredients for a healthy, hydrated skin look will always be on trend.

#COUTURECOPPER is my second favourite trend. It’s all about gorgeous, rich copper shades, which range from light, sun-kissed vibes to bold and luxurious metallic finishes!

And don’t forget about the #softgoth makeup trend, which is inspired by popular TV shows, grunge culture and dramatic fashion shows.  Personally, I’m hoping that coloured eye makeup will be back next summer because colour is a beauty power!

Lastly, as a Men’s Folio tradition — what was your most played song this year and why?
My playlist varies according to my mood—so for me, it changes from time to time! Having a wide variety of music choices also inspires me to create more makeup looks!
