Think of an athlete’s usual definition of fashion, and the aesthetic differs between suits or the gaudy fare of bling to the excess and threads that could rival a rapper’s. Victor Cruz’s penchant for clean silhouettes, crisp lines, luxury sneakers and high-end streetwear puts this New York Giants player in a sartorial class of his own. Ricardo Tisci’s acknowledgement of Cruz’s exemplary style has landed the football star the honour of being the face of Givenchy’s Fall/Winter 2015 advertising campaign, alongside th fashion industry’s living legend, Donatella Versace and androgynous singer, Li Yu Chun, also known as Chris Lee.
Cruz’s brooding demeanour encapsulated in the photographs perfectly conveys the romantic Victorian-esque mood that inspired Tisci through the collection. Tisci justifies his choice of Cruz for the campaign by saying, “Victor Cruz represents the Givenchy Man this season. He is a perfect mix of charisma, power, elegance and beauty and he has this very special sweetness to him. If I had to describe him, I would say he is ‘a gentleman with the looks of a bad boy’.”
