The Macallan Harmony Collection Concludes With the Nuanced Character of Coconuts

The Macallan concludes The Harmony Collection arc with its sixth and final act, showcasing the nuanced character of coconuts

What do chocolate, coffee, green pasture, oak, and tea have in common? Not much, except being the themes or inspirations behind The Macallan’s Harmony Collection. For the better part of the past five years, The Macallan whisked whisky cognoscenti and jolly imbibers alike on a multisensory, experiential journey through its annual releases. This year, The Macallan concludes one of its most well-liked and, in some ways, unorthodox arcs with the nuanced character of coconut comprising two distinctive single malt Scotch whiskies: Inspired by Fresh Coconut (domestic) and Inspired by Toasted Coconut (global travel retail).

As a collection built on The Macallan’s connection to nature through creativity, craftsmanship, innovation, and sustainability, the whisky maker roped in various collaborators to interpret the different expressions. From celebrity sisters Stella and Mary McCartney to contemporary circus producer Cirque du Soleil, and purveyors of fine tea JING tea, each brought their unique takes to The Macallan. After spearheading the inaugural Harmony Collection in 2021 with his two elder brothers, renowned pastry chef Jordi Roca of El Celler de Can Roca has been roped back in as creative conduit for the closing act. The full-circle moment completes its loop at TimeSpirit Dining, held at The Macallan Estate, where chef Roca created a series of sweet treats to pair with the two whiskies. “Collaborating on this release has been a joyful creative journey,” chef Roca shared. “By exploring coconut in its many forms, we have crafted a series of pairings that play with texture, contrast and balance, designed to complement and elevate the whisky in subtle and unexpected ways.”

Instead of selecting whiskies matured in European oak casks, The Macallan turned to the lactone-rich American oak casks. The lactone ester is responsible for naturally imparting rich, creamy, and sweet coconut notes. Conversely, American oak ex-bourbon casks impart classic sweet, fresh characteristics to the whisky. By carefully adjusting the proportions, The Macallan’s Whisky Mastery ended up with the two unique expressions. “With this concluding release, we have carefully guided coconut notes to the forefront of the whisky through precise cask selection and maturation,” The Macallan Master Whisky Maker Kirsteen Campbell said. Just as fresh coconuts evoke clean, refreshing, carefree indulgence, the Inspired by Fresh Coconut (46.3% ABV) offers a similar palate, with notes of coconut, citrus, and tropical fruits layered with vanilla, sweet oak, and gentle spice. The palate unfolds with coconut milk, zesty lime and soft sweetness, leading to a bright, floral finish. On the other hand, Inspired by Toasted Coconut (43.3% ABV) promises a richer expression with toasted coconut notes. Think dessert decadence characterised by crème caramel and white chocolate complementing the coconut truffle, charred pineapple, and frangipane notes, leaving a long, warming finish of sweet oak and tropical fruit.

While the two whiskies deserve all the plaudits heading their way, the packaging deserves special mention for being the most expressive in the Harmony Collection. In line with the Harmony Collection’s commitment to sustainability and material innovation, The Macallan incorporated organic waste into the whisky packaging. Discarded coconut fibres are transformed into a naturally blackened and richly textured material. The pink hues of the Inspired by Fresh Coconut packaging are a nod to the colour of oxidised coconut water. This approach reflects The Macallan’s ongoing exploration of how beauty and craftsmanship can emerge from materials at the end of their natural life. With the Harmony Collection drawing to a close, The Macallan leaves behind not just a series of limited-edition whiskies, but a reminder that inspiration can be found in the most unexpected corners of nature.
