Often times, the concept of tradition and heritage are seen as synonymous with old fashioned. But Balenciaga’s 2026 Lunar New Year Collection centres the joy of shared traditions and holiday excitement in their new campaign.
Within the modern world, there is a growing understanding of family as more than just blood — it’s also the people you choose. Since the holidays can be lonely or daunting to some, togetherness and community should be as important as red packets and Lo Hei during the New Year. While we carry on traditions, we can also create our own and spread the joy of cultural celebration.
Accentuated by a cosmopolitan Shanghai, the campaign by John Yuyi depicts the festive season in the 21st century. Actors and content creators Ma Sichun, Yang Chaoyue, Chen Feiyu, JM, and Tan Suan depict the modern ways the excitement of CNY manifests. Some feast on delicious tanghulu on the streets. Others pose next to red lanterns. But what they all share is a sense of comfort and joy from community and cultural connection.
In a reinterpretation of a holiday collection, the ready to wear collection consists of tracksuits, T-shirts, hoodies, scarves, and a special Balenciaga Le City East-West Bag. By not limiting itself to classic CNY hallmarks, the collection demonstrates less stereotypical festive style. Each item is printed or knitted with an oversized cursive Balenciaga Paris artwork. The Balenciaga logo even creates an ombre effect on certain items.
For those looking for auspicious staples, lucky reds and cultural symbols still appear throughout the collection. As for accessories, a lucky horse shoe and red hearts bag charm add joy to any bag.
Classic footwear have also received new exclusive holiday colour variants. Now, the Hamptons Sneaker come in off-white, red, and grey, with red scribblings on the laces. In addition, the Track Sneaker comes in white, red, grey, and black.
This year, no matter if you’re far from home or in the heart of the celebrations, everyone can hold a piece of holiday spirit.
