Tell us about your profession. I’m an actor. When did you decide to actively pursue your passion as a career? I’ve always wanted to act. After I finished National Service in 2014, I tried acting two months prior to entering university and managed to get a decent amount of roles. I continued to get roles throughout my undergraduate studies and never looked back a year later. What are some misconceptions people have about your profession? People think it’s very glamorous but it’s quite far from the truth in fact. Our working hours are long and odd, and work doesn’t end when you get off set. You have to rehearse your lines for the next day.

You put in a lot of hard work and dedication, what is the most rewarding part so far? It’s when people can relate to what my character goes through. I once played a man who was in the closet and I’ve had interviews about it, including many fans who reached out about the portrayal. It encourages me when my work touches people. The Tissot Seastar 1000 is made to withstand extreme pressure, how do you cope with the demands of your work? The most I’ve ever grown in various areas of life is when I jump into the deep end. You find yourself doing your best in whatever situation and you realise you’re capable of doing it. I do it because I trust that I’ll come out the other side better and stronger. Describe yourself when you are away from the public eye. I’m trying to be a bit more open with my struggles. I’m quite shy and suffer from imposter syndrome. I focus on my highlights but I always hyperfocus on my flaws.

The Tissot Seastar 1000 combines both style and performance without compromise, what comes to mind when you think about both aspects? Style is important and unique. I’m still trying to find and own my style and let it work for me — I’m slowly getting there. Functionality is a good aspect of performance. Something that balances style and performance is the gold standard to hit. Do you rate one aspect higher than the other in your everyday dressing? They are equally important. You can look very stylish but also quite foolish if you don’t feel comfortable in it. Though slippers and shorts are very comfortable, they just won’t cut it because we should do better than that. One of Tissot’s taglines is “This is your time” — what is your interpretation of it? I always believe that today is as good a time as any to try something new, change yourself, be better or to go towards a new direction. Make the choice with your life and lead it the way you want to. If it scares you, you’re moving in the right direction.

The Tissot Seastar 1000 Melds Style and PerformanceTell us about your profession. I’m a full-time national silat athlete. When did you decide to actively pursue your passion as a career? When I was 14 years old, in sports school. It was there where I met a lot of student athletes and decided it was something I wanted to excel in and I got serious about it. What are some misconceptions people have about your profession? Silat isn’t a very big sport in Singapore and the first thing that comes to my mind when they hear it is — is it a dance or performance? They are not entirely wrong since silat can be categorised as either artistic or combat sport. I do the latter.

You put in a lot of hard work and dedication into your profession, what is the most rewarding part of your journey so far? Seeing progress in myself. I’ve lost a few fights but I feel I needed those losses to understand how it feels to win. That is where my drive comes from. The Tissot Seastar 1000 is made to withstand extreme pressure, how do you cope with the demands of your work? I always show up for myself. No matter how busy a day gets, I always set time aside for myself to relax and take my mind off being an athlete. It can be as simple as a night-time skincare routine, just to be a regular person without the mindset of an athlete. Describe yourself when you are away from the public eye. I’m very reserved actually. I do enjoy a lot of alone time and I rather take time for myself than to go out and socialise.

The Tissot Seastar 1000 combines both style and performance without compromise, what comes to mind when you think about both aspects? Style to me is what I’m comfortable with and what looks good to me. Performance is anything that allows me to give my 100% or my best. Do you rate one aspect higher than the other in your everyday dressing? They are equally important to me because to perform my best, I need to look my best [laughs]. You know what they say — look good, feel good and perform better. One of Tissot’s taglines is “This is your time” — what is your interpretation of it? Not taking anything for granted and not waiting for opportunities to come — go grab them. The time is now, don’t waste it.
